I view this as similar to (though still worse than) sending a drug addict to prison without some sort of accompanying rehab to help improve his or her situation. We should try to help these women improve their lives so they no longer have to resort to prostitution.

Prostitutes tend to be victims themselves. Target poverty instead and you'll lower prostitution.

Or legalize prostitution and open up a whole new industry where there are actually standards. Plus the women get taken care of.
As long as there are people, there will be hookers.

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK WERE THEY SMOKING?!
Prostitutes are still people. People who, generally, don't have much in the way of support systems--that's why a lot of them became prostitutes to begin with.
So let's just make it that much harder for them. Gotta love a city that kicks you while you're down.

Too fucking right.
There will be hookers and they will work in dangerous environments exposed to contagious disease and random episodes of violence from customers who are just fuckheads, let alone the emotional abuse of some clients who look down on what they do (don't forget you're the one who is paying for sex you cockbrained turd)
At least legalised and regulated there is greater protection for sex workers from these dangers together with support networks. Furthermore as a regulated industry there is more likely to be more tax revenue and less undeclared income.

Yeah that should get them to stop being prostitutes.

Does anyone else feel that our "justice" system is less about justice or protecting the populace and more about punishing people and filling jail cells? |

Yep. |
| In retrospect, for profit jails probably weren't such a good idea.

But the free market solves everything! It has an invisible hand! Do you have an invisible hand, Paradox? I didn't think so.

Of course, being the victim doesn't necessarily mean the legal system cares about you, even if they are the ones applying that label.
Which is why we have that other great trend in law enforcement... prosecuting teen agers as sex offenders if they take naked pics of themselves or have sex with someone their own age.

That's pretty much what it's been about since the rise of the prison-industrial complex.
Plus, it allows politicians to appear "tough on crime".

Hell, it goes back even farther, before there was a "Justice System", when each state had its own method for dealing with criminals. Why'd you think they call them "penitentiaries"?

Isn't that law highly unconstitutional? Weren't sodomy laws struck down in 2003? Lawrence vs. Texas IIRC.

Told my mom about this, and she insisted that prostitutes have always been charged as sex offenders in every state. Can someone familiar with law explain where/how she might be getting confused on this, unless she's flat-out wrong?

I'm starting to think that we should abolish the sex-offender registry altogether. At minimum, it should be restricted to people who violated age of consent laws.
Furthermore, the decision to put someone on the list should be made when they get out of jail.
