 Main Page Pre-Registration
« Thread Started on Jun 27, 2010, 9:03am »

Registration is being opened up to help deal with some old problems on the site, nick theft, limited navigation and a distinct lack of recgonition for people who have given quite a bit to the site.

Before the plans for accounts are detailed I will get this out of the way: It is not now, nor will it ever be, required.

For Nick theft, registered accounts which post will have an underline under their name. They also do not need to enter their names for each comment as that is already done for them.

Limited navigation, currently in the planning stages but worth mentioning, is allowing for accounts to select favorite quotes, as well as display which quotes they have submitted. Along with this will come a tool to claim quotes that were made by your username and email, as well as being able to change if your user name is displayed with the quote or not after it has been submitted. There have also been suggestions of personal or community created lists of qutoes, which is certainly possible, but there is no ground work for it yet.

Lack of recognition, with the ability to show which quotes you have submitted there will be some, however there is already the ground work to give people credit for the titles they have come up with, which were then applied by the moderators. Allowing people to show off which quotes they managed to generate awards for.

Since the administration team understands not everyone wants to claim what they have done here, anything beyond the underline to designate a registered account will be completely optional and will default to off unless changed by the user.

You can find this interface here: http://www.fstdt.com/PreRegistration.aspx

First stupid question comes here:

So, this is needed to be done by everyone wishing to keep their nick on the mainpage and prevent it's usage by someone else, I get that,
BUT how about those who already have account to do the Admin stuff over there, do they need a new account on the mainpage, too? (And if so, how do they work together, or do they not? Always needing logging in and so on?)

It's the exact same account, if you're logged in for admin you're logged in for the site. I'm just opening it back up to registration and adding some actual use to it beyond admin.

My question is already answered. I was about to register myself, and it already told me that I had registered. Cool. What other new functions might be involved on the main page?

I have most of it detailed out here: http://www.fstdt.net/FAQ.aspx#Register
but I'm sure some odd thing will come up while I'm working on these.
Edit: Which I copied and made into this OP in this thread... Sorry, just woke up over here.

My main motivation for this 'pre-registration' was to avoid the potential drama with open registration snagging the names of people who had been on the site for years. I'm giving folks a week on their own, then I'm going to do an email blast to people who submitted a quote with a valid email and username detailing what's going on and which names they have available to them. One more week after that, and unless there's still a steady flow of pre-regs I'm going to open it up to open registration.

While I'm thinking about it, when I ran test runs on this system the emails got bounced to my junk mail box. So those who are registering and reading this trying to figure out where it is, check there. If you still can't find it send me an email at PreReg at fstdt.net . i'll find some way to get you moving.

It can be kinda picky, but what exactly is it telling you? There's a few error messages to it that'll give me an idea of what's going on.

Pre registration is probably going to go for two more weeks, I've spent today rebuilding my desktop and in checking I'm noticing a lot of inactive accounts. So I'm planning to get this thing setup and start cracking on a secondary registration email wave from my personal account to get accounts setup.

I'm in a similar situation as clockworkgirl21. The registrations isn't, well, registering. When I try to register as Horsefeathers, or even just check the username, I get this: "You are not able to register this name, if you believe you should email PreReg@fstdt.net."

I sent an email to that address the other day but no reply. I'm sure you're busy with quite a few other things so I thought I'd post here to let you know it's not working for me.

Any help?

Well, the rules it operates on are fairly simple. If you've submitted a quote with the username and email you're using then it's available, otherwise you have to have made a comment on a quote from your current IP Address before 6/25/10.

I'm a bit busy today to do the checking, but I've got tomorrow off and I can get some checking done then.

And that said it looks like my outlook isn't pciking up the pre-reg emails right now. What the fuck... I'll have to fix that.

So since I've submitted dozens of quotes under the name Tiger, it should be available? It's giving me the message: "You are not able to register this name, if you believe you should email PreReg@fstdt.net."

I'm attempting to register from my regular IP, though I've also submitted some from school.

If you attached the same email address to the quotes as you're trying to register with, yes.

I can look up the addresses involved an pm you with them if you want.

Nope, it keeps giving me the same message. I've tried both the e-mail addresses I use regularly and neither worked.
