Stevens is the former Senator from Alaska and was the chairman of the Committee on Technology or something, in which capacity he famously referred to the Internet as a series of tubes. I believe he had to resign just before the 2008 election because of some sort of misdoing becoming public. IIRC, he didn't resign. He was running for reelection, but was not reelected.

Oh, sure, drag facts into it. But I was half right, anyway. From wiki:
"During his trial, Stevens campaigned for re-election to his Senate seat. On November 4, 2008, eight days after his conviction [for failing to report gifts, which is an ethics violation], he lost the election to Democrat Mark Begich by 3,953 votes, a 1.24% margin. Stevens conceded defeat in a statement released the next day, making him the first sitting U.S. senator from Alaska to be defeated in a general election and the longest-serving U.S. Senator ever to lose a re-election bid."

So can I feel bad that five people died and yet still think one of those five was a complete and utter asshole?

So can I feel bad that five people died and yet still think one of those five was a complete and utter asshole? I dunno, can you? I mean, yes, the position is tenable. Whether each individual can is up to them.
