The sad reality is that without the political leadership and cultural will to change the course of human-accelerated climate change, nothing will be done until it is far to late to prevent a catastrophic shift in the Earth's ecosystems. We will have to struggle as a species to adjust, using technology, to a physical reality we were not evolved to deal with. It's either that or we embrace extinction as a species.
Planet Earth doesn't care. If we destroy everything, SOME form of life will survive and evolve and the whole process will start over. Perhaps in a million years highly evolved squid will be excavating the long-fossilized remains of human civilization and marveling that beings with rigid skeletons had achieved so much.
Even more tragically, the nations of this Earth that are causing the problems are the only ones who can deal with it....and they have all sold their souls to corporate and political expediency. The mantra of the industrialized world seems to be "Fuck the future, I need cash now." This ideal has become so pervasive that it now controls the special interests that control politics and the media. We may make a nod towards "green" technology and lifestyles, but in the end we are brainwashed into believing that life is not worth living without arctic air conditioning and SUVs big enough to drive an entire little league team to practice. We have sold out the planet in exchange for corporate profits and Big Macs, and we will reap what we have sown.

Also, anything which reaffirms your position releases dopamine into your system. The same chemical released by sex, drugs, & food. This is good for forming subgroupings and inspiration, but it is bad for critical thinking. It is also part of the reason why you end up with these crazy Fundamentalist cults--accepting that every scientific & historical fact you've ever learned is wrong or at least heavily skewed is stressful, better to just rationalize why the new information can't possibly be true.
Many of our brain systems didn't evolve to process the world on pure fact, they evolved to do what kept us alive at the time.
