Single parents should be forced to marry to give the childrens a mommy and a daddy. And widows. Can't forget them. ETA: I keep reading the title as "How to talk about S&M at Thanksgiving." Anyone else have that problem? No, but I can't say that it's surprising. ;P

Maybe I should just leave this pro-segregation comic from the 60s here: www.ep.tc/georgewallace/The whole "We're victims being persecuted for our totally-not-bigoted beliefs" card is not new.

The most striking thing about that comic isn't the naked racism, or that it is obviously a publication on par with any 1960 comic book, but that the accomplishments lauded in it include things that today would be labeled socialist. The creation of public trade colleges, industrial stimulus, old-age pensions, and veterans' affairs are all touted as victories for this guy, a politician from the deep South, right next to an anti-communist message. Christ, I wish the country would indulge in populism again.

Anyone else have that problem? What problem? Though I do admit whenever I see SSM I think of S&M which makes me all kinds of confused depending on the sentence. Like the one in the thread title.

They always claim to "have nothing against gays so long as they keep it to themselves," but it seems to me like the people who fit that description usually lean towards supporting gay marriage. Don't believe me? Dare to compare:
"Do you mind gay people?" "Not so long as they keep it to themselves." "What do you mean?" "Well, hey, if some dude wants to marry & have sex with another dude, that's his business. Just so long as they aren't making out in public, or something." "And what about the straight couples who do that?" "Spay them."
"Do you mind gay people?" "Not so long as they keep it to themselves." "What do you mean?" "Well, they're always talking about 'getting married,' & that's just a sick abomination we should never allow because they MOLEST CHILDREN & did you know about all of the SICK SEX RITUALS they have? DEY EAT DA POO-POO! IF I HAD A GAY KID I WOULD DISOWN HIM OR HER!" "O...kay...so, do you think it should be illegal?" "They can do whatever they want so long as they don't get caught." "And if they do?" "Is it socially acceptable to say 'kill them' in this country?"

I see it as S&M as well, which gives me horrible, horrible thoughts of Maggie Gallagher...
And honestly? It's hard enough to get a family together for thanksgiving in the first place, you don't need to exacerbate an already bad situation by making it a podium for you to announce your religious beliefs. Something which most members of your family are probably sick and tired of by that point, if you're actually feeling the need to do this.
I mean, God forbid that Thanksgiving actually be an enjoyable family get-together. Instead, it needs to be used to combat those EVIL gays and their SODOMY!

It's even worse if there are LGBT people at the fucking table. I mean, Thanksgiving is supposed to be a joyous family holiday, and when you feel the need to inject your bigotry into everything, you're alienating people.

I really believe that Thanksgiving dinner should be done at the dinner table, not at the fucking table. The fucking table should be in another room. Or, better, all the other rooms.

No. You really cannot oppose same sex marriage and have the moral high ground. One position involves recognizing the basic humanity of people no matter what, and the other involves denying that. I, personally, agree with you . I object to the idea of one idea somehow being morally superior to another. MorAL OPINIONS AREN'T ZERO SUM It is possible for differing moral opinions to be correct simultaneously. Sorry for the caps.
