But how does it do that? Does it work like a search engine?

Somewhat like it, but designed to give you only a few results instead of pages of things to parse through.

It seems more likely to me that we're dealing with ignorance, not malice. Most programmers are male and as a result know jackshit about female sexuality. Add in a mildly misogynistic culture and this is the result. Then how come Siri directs you to a CPC?

"It was only by accident that we coded this app to exclude birth control and abortion, while mysteriously including organizations with an anti-reproductive rights slant!"

"It was only by accident that we coded this app to exclude birth control and abortion, while mysteriously including organizations with an anti-reproductive rights slant!" Yeah, that would actually be a pretty easy turnaround to happen with a basic programming bug.

Apparently the app searches Yelp, not Google, which explains why it can't find clinics or counseling centers. It doesn't explain why it can find Viagra but not Plan B, though, since both are found at pharmacies.

I don't see the correlation between Yelp & not finding clinics/counseling centers.

I don't see the correlation between Yelp & not finding clinics/counseling centers. I would guess that Yelp does not have a good directory for the clinics.

I don't see the correlation between Yelp & not finding clinics/counseling centers. I went to Yelp and searched "abortion clinics" and "abortion". First search gave no results, second search gave me one - a crisis pregnancy center. Searching "Planned Parenthood" got me two relecant results. Since Yelp is based on customer reviews, and most people aren't going to be in the mood to go rave about their abortion provider's service, I think that might the problem. Frankly, I'm one to blame stupidity/ignorance over malice in these cases. Since this is one the first apps of its kind, I can see where blind spots in its word-recognition and search methods would come up. This one happens to be very unfortunately placed.

That is FUCKED up.
My dad has "Iris" for his Droid (which is their answer to Siri), and I don't know how it is in comparison to the Apple program, but that thing is dumb as shit. We tried an experiment and I found 5 answers searching through Google on my phone while he was still trying to get the program to fully understand what he was even asking.

Really, the more I play with Yelp the less I'm inclined to blame Apple for this. I don't think Siri was ever designed with something so specific as an abortion clinic or emergency contraception in mind. Notice that the query involving "unprotected sex" brings up results for "adult stores". Siri isn't programmed to be pro-life, its programmed to recognize keywords and search them on Yelp.

Siri isn't programmed to be pro-life, its programmed to recognize keywords and search them on Yelp. Exactly this. One glitch in a very specific use case for a particularly broad application, and everyone’s seeing some sort of conspiracy. Hell, if the problem is with Yelp, it’s not even a real glitch. It’s just working with bad data. Garbage In -> Garbage Out.
