That's certainly encouraging. Maybe they'll see sense soon (yay alliteration!)

There was an item about this on one of the local (central NC) TV news shows this week. According to that, there is beginning to be a bit of negative backlash in their local community about this. IIRC, of there approximately 40 members, over half walked out of the church due to this decision. Not good enough. That means that about half of them wholeheartedly supported the decision.

No, it just means that they aren't sufficiently appalled to make the decision to leave the church yet.(do keep in mind that this is quite a break for these people). It may be more than that, sure, but you can't know that: "Wholeheartedly"? Where the fuck did that come from?

In the wake of a firestorm over its decision to ban interracial couples from participating in worship services, an eastern Kentucky church has overturned the racist resolution with a second vote in favor of welcoming believers “regardless of race, creed or color.” Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church pastor Stacy Stepp told the Associated Press that the previous vote was rendered void by the determination that church bylaws “can’t run contrary to local, state or national laws.” The issue involving interracial couples joining the congregation first arose when Stella Harville, the daughter of church secretary Dean Harville brought her Zimbabwean fiancé to sing before members. According to Pastor Stepp, the new vote passed with unanimous consent. Source

Sometimes reason wins out when enough pressure is brought to bear.

I'm just delighted that their bylaws already require that they not run contrary to the law (although in this case they wouldn't be bound by it). Render unto Caesar?

It's not really a good thing they reversed the ruling. Seems like they really only did it because people--in the real world AND on the internet--called them on their bullshit. And anyway, even though they're allowing BROWN PEOPLE in on paper, that doesn't mean they'll be wholeheartedly welcomed. Something tells me that if an interracial couple or black couple or Hispanic couple walked in one Sunday there would be an immediate sense of icy snubbing. Let's not forget, there are people in this church who voted to ban biracial couples--those people are not going to change their attitudes just because they got a bit of a social spanking from it.

Well, they may be being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, but at least they're seeing how ridiculous they look to everybody else. And, who knows, maybe it will be an example to those other churches that have this type of attitude but have just never been confronted with it yet.
As I see it, any change for the positive is good change.

Yay. Of course I have a feeling that their bigotry will still exist, but underground.
