On Wednesday night, we had a nasty wind storm here, worse than I've seen since I was a kid. The power went out and it's been out for 2 days now. Lots of trees are down, and lots of houses are damaged, though thankfully now ours. To top it off, I've got a cold and secondary bacterial infection.
But I'm alive and relatively well, sitting at Starbucks, moochin' their WiFi so I can check in with folks on the intertubes.

Is that what happened? My house blacked out for about 5 minutes and that was it. But then I saw phone updates by people that says they were totally out of power.

Glad you're okay. Sorry to hear about the loss of power & the cold/infection, though. It's amazing how much damage high winds can do.
We also had a pretty major windstorm (a chinook, but much stronger than usual) up here last Sunday. I don't know if anyone lost power, but it was bad enough to smash windows in parts of the downtown core and it left quite a few branches and debris scattered across the city. A number of my relatives called to check on my family after it was reported on the news across the country, so that gives you an idea of how epic the winds were.
Anyway, I hope you'll get power back soon.

I'm up in norcal, same thing except with not quite as much wind speed. There are a LOT more trees up here, so with the amount of downed limbs, it's arguably worse. A section of my friend's roof got taken out by a tree limb, and there was another near miss where a kid almost got nailed while in the dentist's chair! I've had no power since the winds picked up, so I'm staying at my parent's house in the mean time. During the worst of it, the road to my house was blocked off by a snapped phone pole on one side, and an oak limb on the other.

Maybe it's Australia that's weird.

My town was out of power for about seven, eight hours from a snowstorm last week. It sucks. (It was actually kind of cool/spooky driving home with no streetlights and the businesses that are normally open darkened, though.) Glad you're okay and hope they get power restored soon.

Sure they fall a lot, but they also protect each other from wind. That said, last year a redwood that was probably... four? Five? Something around there feet, in diameter came down on the power lines. The power lines apparently aren't designed to handle that kind of weight. Lazy engineers.

Redwoods... they're older than your entire family tree, bigger around than your car, heavier than your house, and just don't give a fuck. In a word - awesome.

A lot of the apartment buildings are a little... outdated, let's say, so the lights were flickering all night, and the power cut out sporadically. It was only for a few seconds, just long enough to reset all the clocks >.< Kinda wish it had been longer; I really want to know how this city handles a blackout.

Riverside has been very free of these black out. Or at least the area I'm in.
