news.yahoo.com/promises-promises-securing-us-border-impossible-071019604.htmlIt seems to be the new GOP slogan/flavor of the month. Most of them want to continue Bush's work of building that stupid fence. I think the fence idea was dumb to begin with and was shown on Penn and Tellers "Bullshit" show how easy it is for them to scale the fence anyway. If we really wanted to secure the border, with the armies coming home would it not be easier to deploy them down at the border and have them help out the border control agents? I know it still might not be perfect but I think if you had more man power helping out instead of a stupid fence it would be the better of the two options. What do you all think or suggest?

Of course these people don't REALLY want there to be fewer illegal immigrants. Without them, businesses would be unable to blackmail people into working for far less than minimum wage...
EDIT: Changed "less" to "fewer".

Don't try to keep the illegal immigrants out, give them the same protections as other citizens.
No, seriously. Don't make it illegal for companies to hire illegal immigrants. Do make it illegal to pay them less than legal ones. This way, there's no incentive for companies to hire illegal immigrants over other Americans.
Also, ever notice how the anti-illegal immigration crowd almost never applies their own logic to legal immigrants? It's never "Legal immigrants who filled out all the paperwork and took a citizenship test are taking our jerbs," only the illegal ones are.
Any other reason to think illegal immigration is srs business is thinly-disguised racism. i.e, "They won't dress like us or accept our culture", "They have too many babies," "It's in their culture to be lazy," etc. (I heard all of these "arguments" in a class discussion once. True story.)

There's a really sad side effect of these efforts to build walls and fences along the border that has been rarely addressed. A number of different animal species used to live throughout the southern U.S. that were eliminated around the early 1900s, often by overhuning from ranchers trying to protect their livestock. These include cat species like ocelots and jaguars, which are finally being sighted in the Southwest again due to repopulation from farther south. Efforts to continue their repopulation involve creating corridor areas in the hopes of increasing genetic diversity in ocelots, and jaguars are likely to repopulate on their own as long as existing laws are enforced. The biggest threat to these species in the U.S. would be a loss of genetic diversity, something that would certainly result if an artificial barrier were built and isolated the genetically-limited U.S. populations north of the border. So if you don't already oppose the border fence... do it for teh kittehs.

I always found the "border fence" to be a joke, especially since the there's tunnels in existence that are used to funnel drugs into the country could easily be used, and are used to bring in illegals.

There are even easier ways, like arriving on a tourist visa and then simply never leaving. Guys, if you want to catch illegals, than stop turning a blind eye to them once they're already in. It's amazing how blindingly obvious it is that the fence is just to give the appearance of keeping illegals out without actually doing a damn thing to stop them, and yet people are fucking stupid enough to lap it up.

Personally, a fence isn't such a bad idea. After all a nation has to mark its borders somehow, as far as keeping illegals out, its a joke. No form of passive defense will ever keep anyone out. It will discourage some, and make it harder for them, but it wont solve the problem one little bit.

The Rio Grande doesn't exist on the entire border. The western part of the border is purely artificial. That being said, a fence is stupid.

Another thing that would help would be to increase foreign aid to Mexico and make serious efforts to help modernize the country, so the temptation to flee to the U.S. is reduced. It astounds me that I haven’t seen this this argument once in mainstream political discourse on the issue. It further astounds me that such an idea is usually seen as extremist or ridiculous when I’ve mentioned it. Apparently, helping them is not any of our business. ...because taking measures to prevent illegal immigration is our business, but taking measures to prevent illegal immigration is not our business.

Yeah, but we have to hate on mexicans, it makes some people feel better about themselves, and most of them are too stupid to think critically about stuff. It makes their heads hurt.
