I'm 18, and they let me get financial aid on my own merits. I live in Georgia so it might be different from what you are dealing with. They're covering my collage expenses totally, and I also get 500 bucks a semester for books. So maybe you should move to Georgia.

Ew, Georgia. Sorry, but your state isn't exactly known for enlightenment.

Financial aid for federal purposes is pretty straightforward across the states. The FAFSA is for federal aid, so it really doesn't matter what state you live in as far as the FAFSA goes, the rules are the same -- now, states have different scholarship and state money programs, so that might make a difference. WV for example has the Promise scholarship, which they tie to hours of school completed and a GPA requirement, and you can actually earn that one back -- it doesn't matter if you claim yourself or your parents do. So, that might be how the person from GA is "responsible" for himself totally at 18 y.o. But mostly, it's all in how you fill out that FAFSA the first time.

Their parents may still be claiming them, then, because from the side that I've heard, these are some pretty dickish mothers... My mom tried to claim me after I was moved out and married. Fucked over my taxes a couple years in a row because I was out on my own, supporting myself, and discovered that while I was filing my own taxes, she was also claiming me.

I'm sorry, I just now saw this...I thought the federal rules trumped all, though, and that the FAFSA has these really strict guidelines? Like... "Were you born before January 1, 1986 (question 48)? As of today, are you married? (Answer "Yes" if you are separated, but not divorced.) (question 49) At the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, will you be working on a master's or doctorate program (such as an MA, MBA, MD, JD, PhD, EdD, or graduate certificate, etc.) (question 50)? Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training (question 51)? Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces (question 52)?" I'm 19, so number one's out; I can't even look a guy in the eyes and have never been on a date; I won't even begin my Bachelor's until next year; I wouldn't last 5 minutes in ANY Armed Forces; ditto the last answer. Do you know what they awarded you independent status under? I'm not ready to move out on my own just yet, I have to keep saving for an apartment, car insurance, etc...
