^ Sorry if this is off topic but I just have to share this. I was talking to this person yesterday who writes fan fics. I asked how come you like to write fan fics so much. She told me because she wanted to be a professional writer one day. So I said, well how about writing your own original stories with original ideas, it would be good practice to be a professional writer. She then got mad at me and said, and I'm not joking about this, "Original stories are boring, I don't like writing them, I like fan fiction better." Well I guess she didn't want to actually be a professional writer.

Even though she expressed it poorly, as a fanfic (including Bibleslash, to stay on topic) and original ficlet writer myself, I think I can understand what she means. Most original stories, by their very nature, require world-building on the part of the author. I find world-building to be incredibly tedious and boring. Even someone who wants to be an original writer can use fanfiction to practice telling a story they want to get out, without having to go through the whole pain in the butt that is building an entire new world to tell their story with. Of course, bad fanfiction comes into play when someone tells their story with a pre-established world... that doesn't at all support that story. OOC writing, oh how I hate you. Just my take though.

That was written so badly it hurt to read. The damn thing reads like some whiny teenage emo crap, like she's all butt-hurt because her guy lost. And FoxNews (a perfect example of oxymoron) is saying he will do things that she won't like. To put it another way, it reads like "Waaaaaaaaa!!!11eleventyone11!! How is Fox News an oxymoron? Fox and News aren't inherently contradictory.

In short, then. People who write Fanfic for real life need a good toe in the arse. One of my friends used to write fan fic about her favorite rockstar. It was creepy.

There's nothing really wrong with using a preset world to make a story, but only so long as it's unprofessional. If you're not making money off of it, not publishing it, & not claiming it as your own then, like I said, it's fine. While I don't really do "fan fics," I understand where you're coming from. Thing is, I think that woman's idea of "writing" is the Twilight series. More specifically, ripping off the Twilight series. At a certain point, you can go no lower, lady.... Anyway, what I really wanted to comment on was the thing about world building. You could--to put it badly--make shit up as you go along, assuming you're doing unrealistic fiction, as for realistic fiction, you have your world. You're gonna have to edit the whole god damn thing, anyway. This way would probably be easier to work with than trying to come up with every little iota of the backstory in 1 go & sticking to that the entire time. It might also go more smoothly, in the long run. But, in any case, I'm not sure if I see world building any more "tedious" or "boring" than the rest of the writing process itself--particularly editing. Harder, perhaps, but if you're writing something you enjoy, it shouldn't necessarily bore you, unless you get to the technical stuff. Or, at least, that's my take on it.

Funny...this week is the one-year anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers. One year ago, Obama was not the president.

I love making my own worlds, even if for no other reason than this one sucks.

Heres something sad
Recently my friend got me into asian pop music. TVXQ, Super Junior, Big bang, all that stuff
And a massive thing involved with Super junior and TVXQ are fanfictions. Smut fanfiction
But here is the kicker, the girls write the fan fics, and all the fan fics ARE GAY. Super junior members fucking other super junior members.
The thing is, they cant stand to think about their favorite singer with another girl, so they like to write GAY PORN of them.

Society: Do you see what monogamy has done to us? It creates weirdo yaoi fanfic. I hope you're happy.

I probably worded that badly- I'm okay with world-building (though I tend to try and figure out every little detail, which is where I get bored) However, it's getting across information about the new world, in the story, that I really have trouble with (the pacing of it mostly, I have a tendancy to info dump if I'm not careful) Maybe you're right that I should just try and wing it- I can't over-explain things if even I don't know what's going on. But really- ripping off Twilight? That's just... that's just so bad that I can't even think of a metaphor for how bad that is. I'd say it's like ripping off songs from Hanson but- 1) I'm about a decade too late for that joke and, 2) I still have "Mmmmbop" downloaded onto my MP3 player.

On Fanfics I used to come up with Comic book story lines for my favorite characters and I even created my own characters to fit in the universe who would then branch off into their own storylines. It's not hard to jump from there to creating your own world with it's own characters. Most times now I take a world I know and twist it. Take a Buffy style vampire universe where the undead exist and people are oblivious and instead of following a slayer or heroic vampire with a soul have the main character be a female vampire who was turned by a one night stand gone wrong and now preys on drunk guys in seedy bars.

I never find world building boring (it's actually my favourite part) but I do tend to infodump. And because of the way I obsess myself with figuring out every tiny detail about how everything happened and how everything works they can get rather bad. And then I get paranoid that I stated something that I wasn't completely sure of and that person X threw person Y 3 metres further than what his strength allows and I'll have to rewrite the whole scene. Yeah. I'm not sure if there was a point to that. Except to say that I really, really like building detailed worlds.

For a group of people who are supposed to turn from all worldly things, they sure do have a fixation on money.
