So, I'm in the process of getting my teeth fixed up, after several years of not going to the dentist. Just got back from getting one half deep-cleaned; my face is still numb. Bad teeth and diabetes run on both sides of my family. So apparently there is a link between bad teeth/gum disease and diabetes. In which case it can be assumed that it's my own damn fault I got diabetes, because I didn't take care of my teeth for so long. Now really, it sounds gross but I do brush daily, sometimes use floss and Listerene. I'm not missing any teeth. But arrrrgh. Don't mind me, I'm just gonna wallow in self-pity for a while.

If it's any consolation, I think the causation on that one is the other way round: diabetes makes tooth problems more likely rather than vice versa. In any case, hope the rest of the work goes OK - can't stand going to the dentist myself.

You're taking care of the problem. Ease up on yourself.

*hugs Aqualung* Bad teeth really suck. Why didn't you go to the dentist for years? Were you having money and/or insurance problems?

*hugs Aqualung* Bad teeth really suck. Why didn't you go to the dentist for years? Were you having money and/or insurance problems? Yep. No money/insurance for quite a while. I went a lot when I was a kid; I had bad teeth then too but I don't remember if I didn't take care of them or it was genetics. Probably both. At least I quit drinking soda/pop a few years ago; that shit is terrible for your teeth. (Though I'll drink it in mixed drinks once in a while still, heh.) szaleniec : I've been diabetic less than two years, so I'm pretty sure in my case it was the teeth that went first. I suppose it all comes down to being young and stupid and thinking you're invincible.

*hugs* Sorry to hear.
ETA: You can have symptoms of diabetes before you're actually to the point of being diabetic. It's possible your teeth predated the condition, while still being related to it. I think i worded that poorly, but you have the idea. I hope.

I suppose so, but we're talking several years here. Ugh. I'm really not looking forward to getting my wisdom teeth pulled either. The bottom ones are partially impacted, so I'll have to be put under for it. And then I won't be able to practice my instruments for a while afterward. -_-;; Guess I'll have to play with my guitar instead, hehe.

I know how you feel. I have bad teeth, but not from diabetes. Mine are caused by 1. being homeless for a year and a half, not being able to take care of them, 2. coming out of being homeless, and going to the meth, and 3. having a serious case of acid reflux. I've had some work done on them, and I know it's not fun. And the pain killers they gave me to take care of the pain didn't help any.

Aqualung: Don't sweat the wisdom teeth. The extraction process is not as grim as you imagine. You're either under (as you say) or so anesthetized that there's little or no discomfort. Then two or three days on eggs and milk shakes and you'll be fine.

Don't worry. I have shitty teeth too. My Porcelain tooth is completly discolored because of all the pop I used to drink.

Wisdom teeth aren't too bad. If they give you an opiate of some sort try to get off that as soon as you can, they can have some unpleasant side effects. Plus I found all they did was make me tired, simple Ibuprofen did a better job of taking away the pain.

Oh man... I hate wisdom teeth. They had to knock me out with gas and cut into the bone to dig mine out. My head was wrapped in ice for either a little over or a little under a week (time sense was weird), and I was basically subsisting on icypops since it's all I could get into my mouth without intense pain, in spite of my really good pain pills. I had to spend all my time in a lazyboy chair in the living room because I couldn't go up and down stairs or be horizontal. Once or twice I nearly passed out because I couldn't eat food.
On the plus side, I got to nearly memorize the Hitchhikers' movie and its special features.

At least having the wisdom teeth pulled gives you an excuse to eat ice cream and your favorite soup for at least a few days, just concentrate on the silver lining (((Aqua)))))
And I feel you about the teeth thing, it runs in my family. I had to rush to get a tooth pulled right before I left for my semester abroad b/c I won't be under my parents insurance when I return. The dentist and nurses/assistants complimented on how calm and relaxed I was throughout the whole procedure. I really wanted to point to all my fillings (I have one on over half the teeth in my mouth) and tell him that I've had no choice but to learn how to behave in the dentist's chair.
And the tooth still hasn't grown in yet and probably never will, so who knows what'll happen with the gap in my teeth after I get back.

I still have my wisdom teeth. I'd like to keep them thank you very much. Hey, I went to the dentist last week and he didn't have any issue with that. Plus, my mom still has hers so I've got genes on my side.
