Ya I don't think there is much out there about it yet. From what I gather, it's just another proposal that hasn't yet been okay-ed by the Obama admin. Correct me if I'm wrong though. RR jumps on any little kernal and completely balloons it out of control, no matter if they have information on it or not.

This'll never happen in the USA. If you need a reason as to why this is a bad idea, look at Malaysia, my home country. Many youths are picked randomly to enter a 3-month "camp", which is supposed to boost their 'love for the nation'. However, it has only shown Malaysians the racism and haphazardness that permeates the nation, and really, only widens the racial divide. Not only that, considering the guy who proposed this is a racist conservative who'd bit in nicely with 60's GOP its just a propoganda machine, in the end.
National service should be instilled, not forced. It should be earned, and Obama needs to give the people a reason to be proud of their nation again. Because true patriots will strive to make this country better if they know they're not alone in their fight.

Doesn't this "forced youth service" have something to do with money for college? I haven't really paid a lot of attention to it, but I thought that the deal was if you did so many hours a week of community service, you'd get so many dollars for post-secondary.

Last I knew, that's what it was. Considering I need the money, I would gladly partake in that program. Also, even Faux News states that it isn't a mandatory program, just more money to groups like Americorps. www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/03/18/house-readies-passage-volunteerism-critics-pricey-forced-service/

Why the hell not. It just seems like RR is getting upset for absolutely nothing, as usual.

Haven't read their thread but here's a simulation of what I believe it might be like:
Raptard #1: Mandatory charity and community service? Satan must be behind such a foul scheme...Jesus would never allow for such evil!
Raptard #2: fap fap fap Oooooh Chuck Norris fap fap fap
Raptard #3: Um, I think Christ wants us to be charitable and help out in our communities.
Raptard #1: You are hereby BANNED for trolling!

Well yes they do seem to distort reality beyond recognition over at R.R. quite often...but what else do they have to do while waiting for the big whoosh? Just like them to start running off at the mouth about the program being "mandatory". IIRC someone at some point suggested that all high school students should do 50 volunteer hours prior to graduation. I don't remember any specifics and I havn't heard anything else about it for at least a year or so. Maybe that is where they got the idea from? Frankly even if they did ask for 50 hours I wouldn't be morally opposed to the idea, would fifty hours spread over four years of highschool really be any burden? It might actually help some of the kids who seem unable to think about anything but themselves to go out into the real world for once.

I know I did well over 50 hours of volunteer work in high school, but I was in the honor's society and it was required. It's really not hard to do.

Sigh. I was over at RR earlier and had to stop lurking before my brain exploded. So much hatred. So much stupidity. It is usually fun to get into their crazy, but they are getting scary hateful and stupid. All the allusions to getting armed, making Nazi-Stalin-socialist-fascist-communist referrals about Obama is freaking nuts. Top that off with civil war chat. Just nuts. One or more of these nuts is going to do something very bad...perhaps in a Chuck Norris toupees?
Don't ya just love the volunteer service proposal being referred to as Obama's "brown shirts?"
