I got some really sad news today. I'm a mentor prof at my state university, and one of the students I had last semester was killed by a train on Monday while he was jogging on the tracks with his Ipod. Story & news clip: www.wtov9.com/news/19003907/detail.htmlI know this doesn't affect any of you guys personally, but he was such a good kid. He dropped out of my university to go do a tour with his band in California for three months and finish an album. He was back in West Virginia after that getting ready to go back to school. (The school mentioned in the news clip is not the same one I work at). He used to send me emails all the time telling me how he was doing, and I used to harangue him about saving the money he was getting from his music. He was just 18 years old. I think what got to me the most was that all of his former classmates who I'm teaching this year knew about it this morning, but they waited until after class to tell me, because they thought I would be more upset than they were and they didn't want to start class off that way for me. It was a touching and protective gesture from 18 year old freshmen. I guess I'm posting this here because I need an outlet. And because I want to tell you all to take care of yourselves.

I've dealt with a couple of student car accidents, but nothing that serious.
I'm not sure how I'd feel about it, but I do know that I feel a certain parental responsibility for many of my students.
that's rough

It's weird, you do sort of feel like a "den mother," or something. Plus, my job is to take first generation college students and get them through comp & rhet plus another course--so I see the same kids for one full university year for three different classes. I know them better and I'm closer to them. It is weird. It's not like we're friends. But it still hurts.

God, that's just terrible. That's got to be so hard on his parents, a kid that young. I just feel really sorry for everyone who knew him, its obvious that it got to your other students, or they wouldn't have acted the way they did.

I am so sorry. I know some of your other students will be coming to you and/or letting this affect them, so you have an extra burden. It was so sweet how they tried to "protect" you from the news. You need outlets, and it's good that this can be one of them.

Geez, that's awful. And he was a musician too; how sad.

What a shame, it was such an easily preventable death too.

May he find the light he couldn't find in this life.
Ironbite-and maybe stay off train tracks when he comes back around.
