The job creation bill drafted by Harry Reid passed 62-30 in a vote to invoke cloture, or end a potential filibuster. Five Republicans voted to bring the bill to a final vote including the newly elected GOP Senator Scott Brown. Brown said that while he is not entirely happy with the bill he see it as an important first step. Joining Brown was GOP Senators Susan Collins, Olympia J. Snowe, George V. Voinovich and Christopher S. Bond. Senator Ben Nelson was the sole Democrat to vote against the measure, but his vote came after it was clear that it would pass. I wonder if Brown will still be thought of as the GOP savor after breaking with his party and voting with the Dems? www.nytimes.com/2010/02/23/us/politics/23jobs.html?ref=todayspaper

I heard on the radio one of the GOP voters (from Ohio, I think), say that the reason he voted for it was because if they missed the opportunity to unlock this money, they'd miss the construction season for roads, and that road building was definitely a job creator. Good to see some of them have some sense and thought about people first before politics.

It should be noted that Voinowich and Bond are retiring. Unfortunately they know that if they were up for reelection and voted the way they did, they'd have a snowball's chance in hell of getting reelected in this new GOP.

On the bright side this suggests they should be voting their consciences for the remainder of their last terms.

Ugh. Strom Thurmond.
Anyway, good for this handful of GOP senators. It boggles my mind that "paralyze the government" and "be a patriot" could conceivably be conflated in so many minds.

One of the longest-serving congressmen in history. Game, set, match to Term-Limits.

One of the longest-serving congressmen in history. Game, set, match to Term-Limits. Of course the opposite end of that argument is Ted Kennedy. If it was not for his long service in the senate and the programs he helped to create and enact we may not be as close to health care reform as we are now.

Ted Kennedy was a good man.

The question becomes, are we willing to put up with the Strom Thrumonds so we can also have the Ted Kennedys?

Then a pedantic grammarian comes through and it becomes:
Are we willing to put up with the Stroms Thurmond so we can also have the Teds Kennedy?
