I've done it a few different times, but they all seem to die out from a lack of interest/time/inspiration. I liked the character that I came up with for the last one I did, though I didn't get a chance to fully develop his back story.

I never roleplayed by writing. Tabletops games, now that's a different story. I've been roleplaying for 10 years now, and counting, in many different universes.

I play by post. Exalted, Scion, occasionally Aberrant.

I used to RP in AOL chat rooms. They would create simple rules for stats, create guilds to enforce the rules for raising stats and combat, then completely ignore all other guilds' rules in favor of their own. They even had a dice roller.
At one point, my character got killed by another whose attack consisted of, "Attacked (my character, can't remember the name) before he can act. Character is instantly dead). No dice rolls, nothing. When I called him on it, he and his buddies called me a noob and claimed my response was the worst form of responsible game-playing they had ever seen. At that point, I quit as it wasn't woth it to get ticked off at games.
I did make up rules that were basically trimmed-down rules from the D20 system, and I ran a few small games with friends online. Those were fun sometimes.
And of course, there were the NSFW rp sessions. One person, a 39 year old British woman, was REALLY good at it, and I often had to get up and walk away because my head was spinning.
I still prefer offline tabletops though, at least for everything but the last one.

I'm (planning on) doing some science to roleplay.
Specifically I want to look at MMO roleplay, because it's decentralised with a distribution of narrative responsibility and it's non-interventionist (i.e. GM-less), which suits my purposes, but I think collaborative writing also fits that bill.

I mean play by post RPing. You write, no dice involved, no tapletops. Just your imagination and a computer. If anyone is interested in a Star Trek themed roleplay, send me a PM. We've got a nice little group, but would love some new blood. Likewise, I have a link to a Dragonball Z 'flavored' RP site if that tickles your fancy. I also enjoy one-on-one RPs that are done over Instant Messenger. If THAT tickles your fancy, let me know too. I don't really have any druthers. I roleplay: Star Trek, Star Wars, House MD, Bones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, historical (World War 2 and such)

The sandman has been playing P&P RPGs since 1979, when I was suckered into a game of "Chainmail" by a mate.
DMed at GenCon for years back in the good old Lake Geneva days until Hasbro took over the company and screwed it up.

A bit. In fact... degosroleplaying.aceboard.com/I have a fondness for member-whoring this site. I just haven't done it here because I figured there weren't all that many who'd be interested.

I've played Basic D&D, AD&D and 2nd Edition AD&D. Also dabbled in Star Trek RPG and 2300AD as a player. Also had a blast playing Battletech and I've tried some stuff with 2nd edition Mechwarrior. I also have some books for 3rd Edition Mechwarrior, but I find the mechanics go from complex to quite unwieldy.
I've never played Shadowrun. Ever.
I also cobbled together a d20 system based on the three editions of D&D that I'm familiar with. I've just never put it to the test, and need quite a bit of nagging to actually write the "House Rules" down. Which should be less than 10 pages.
I was also dabbling with a conspiracy/Matrix RPG (I have a story) but just like the other projects, it takes a back seat to my usual addiciton.

You should consider moving it from zetaboards to someplace like invisionfree or proboards. Zetaboards is ugly.

yes, but the few posting games I've played devolved when the mod let them go to little squabbles. You have to have a group that really shares the view of the workings of the universe if you are going to go diceless.
