My sister had a friend who offered to give me a tarot reading. She didn't actually believe tarot had a spiritual basis, but for a twelve-year-old she was amazingly good at cold reading and was into some very strange stuff. She had these creepy dolls and a fascination with zombies. She also wore lots of pink.
She had learned tarot reading from her aunt apparently and had done readings for some of her mother's friends. She didn't bring her cards with her, so she decided to use my sister's Pokemon cards instead. She divided them in a weird way and then had me shuffle and lay the cards in an interesting pattern on the floor. Then she interpreted them for me. It was hilarious and not that inaccurate surprisingly. It is amazing what drawing an eevee can say about your future.
Umm... I guess I'm saying if your reader is using Pokemon cards, they might not be legit, but you should go with it anyway for the lulz.

Next time there's a psychic expo in town, I'm setting up my own pokemon card tarot booth.

He deals the cards as a meditation And those he plays never suspect He doesn't play for the money he wins He doesn't play for respect He deals the cards to find the answer The sacred geometry of chance The hidden law of a probable outcome The numbers lead a dance

A "good" tarot reading is going to be like a "good" astrology reading. The actual thing being said is very vague, but the word choice makes it sound more specific than it is.

this is going to be good, as I've had readings done and I'm looking into getting a tarot deck myself... *sits back eagerly* I have one of those little mini-decks that fits on a keychain. A nice Universal Waite deck...but it's a pain in the ass to shuffle, even if, like me, you have slender fingers. Next time there's a psychic expo in town, I'm setting up my own pokemon card tarot booth. "You have the five of Charizards. That means that you have a fiery temper but are very loyal. You also have wings and can use Fire Blast for 50HP damage."

I'm gonna chime in with something worthwhile for a change: Predicting peoples' reaction to my last post would have been a better example, because it's not directly in your control & there are a multitude of events that could arise because of it. As it just so happens, it seems that the correct prediction was "jack shit." Well, I thought it was clever... Thank you. I must say, I found the hammer & nail analogy to be a good one. Unconvincing, but good. Also, I demand an E-reading thread now.

@ Lithp: I... think that'd be kind of fun. Ask a question, and someone with a deck here on the forums gives you a reading.

"You have the five of Charizards. That means that you have a fiery temper but are very loyal. You also have wings and can use Fire Blast for 50HP damage." Isn't Charizard's trading card attack fire spin?

Isn't Charizard's trading card attack fire spin? Base Set Charizard's attack is Fire Spin, but it does 100 damage. Skyridge Charizard has Fire Blast, for 40 damage. =3

I'm not quite sure I understand the question or understand what the book is saying, either.
I'm guessing (kind of an out there guess) that you and the book are saying Tarot originated as a form of a scam?
(Sorry for flouncing earlier, by the way)

I suppose that depends on what you mean by Tarot. (and yes, in my question I meant the divination bit)
The Tarot deck originated in Italy as a card game with a 78 cards, much like the standard 52/54 card deck. That was it. Hundreds of years later, the people who first claimed you could divine the future with it, were scammers... Has it evolved since then?
There was flouncing???

When I said I was done with the thread, that was flouncing. I dunno, the book made it sound like there was also an occult purpose for the cards right from the start, and then another guy published a book talking about the game and staying far away from the occult, then his followers basically destroyed the knowledge of Tarot, and then it led to some scammers reviving Tarot for their own ends. Then again, the book seemed hard to read anyways. I don't really like PDFs ; And, well, I would hope Tarot has evolved since then. Certainly, any method of divination can be used by scam artists. But those who truly believe in Tarot have a different feel and are more honest. Not saying for a fact that we're more right, but you know what I mean, right?

OK tarot the card game was around in the 1300's. Writings for divination using a tarot deck began nearly 600 years later, in France as mentioned, and yeh, gypsy fortune tellers in the equivalent of travelling fairs were "it" for 500 years... You know. The charlatans. This person seems to base most of his stuff on the first teachings - is it still faithful? www.villarevak.org//td/td_1.htma 'bio' of Papus from the same guy: www.villarevak.org/bio/papus_1.html------------------- a slightly better site with the actual book. www.sacred-texts.com/tarot/tob/index.htmAtlantis?
