While I like to reserve judgment until I hear both sides of the story, it's hard to think of anything that could justify dragging a disabled man from his chair.

Sheesh. Where to start..... There is no 'British Police', there are Police forces throughout the UK. There is no single entity called the 'British Police'. Secondly, the protests they want banned are the ones involving the student fees, which have turned violent all too quickly. The Police forces involved may want to ban them, however it would take an act of Parliament to do so. However, there is no disguising the fact that there has been, and until the NUS gets its finger out and actually does something (for a change), there probably will continue to be violence at these demonstrations. They are already heavily Policed and the Police have better things to do with their time, rather than have half of the Police officer in London (from both the Met and City) Policing demonstrations where there those who want violence. However, they will have to do so. Sheesh. |

I'd like to hear both sides on that as well. I don't think the cops were just going to club him and drag him for just sitting there. I'd have to assume he was instigating something through words and antagonizing the cops. they overstepped their bounds, sure, but over nothing but a guy only sitting in a wheel chair...I doubt it

Yeah, I wonder if I should have provided more in the OP, and in particular, I should've skewed my point towards the second article, which is once again a case of an absurd and/or worrying situation arising out of anti-terror laws or some kind of civil-liberties-qualifying legislation. My real point is, I see certain trends regarding the police and the law in this country, and it's worrying, and the question is: how do you get any kind of accountability for any of this if both major parties are in on it? |

From a practical vantage point I have always found it safer to bully a person who is in a wheelchair than one who isn't. It's not entirely safe, of course, but then, what is? (Stephen Hawking put up hell of a wimpy fight.)

While I won't directly disagree with you with you y'know actually being there and that brick were thrown and windows smashed, much of the violence and vandalism has been cooked up by the police and the media. The Bobbies(are they still called that?) are for all intents and purposes kidnapping these kids by boxing them into the areas they choose to protest in and not letting them leave. They are often unable to get food and are kept there for hours on end, supposedly for "public protection." One memorable story i heard was someone protesting on a bridge with a large crowd and poor railings, the police kept closing the gap forcing people to be squashed against each other and nearly causing several to fall. Never mind the fact that the student have legit grievances in that the tuition hikes are pricing the middle class out of university(college) |
