I'm writing a short story and I need to know how to say "shit goblin" (as in a goblin or imp made out of poo) in French. According to my translation widget it's "le lutin de merde."

Oui, Je parle un peu Français.
Not sure of the specific word for "goblin" (Wikipedia says "lutin" translates into "hobgoblin", so you probably have the right word), but the rest looks correct to me.

I only know enough to insult your mother, say my name, & ask for grapefruit.

Again, not a native French speaker but that looks about right to me. Wiktionnaire also offers 'le gobelin' as a synonym to 'le lutin' but the latter probably sounds better, depends on what you want it for. You could also use the adjective "le lutin merdeaux", although I'm not 100% sure if that would be read as a goblin made of shit or a goblin covered in shit, it might be viable either way.

Continuing my trend of unhelpful comments, you know what this reminds me of?
"It's the Golgatha, an excremental!" "A what?" "A shit demon!"

No, it's a medieval adventure/comedy. But it does involve a poo monster, sort of.
EDIT: The working title is The Legend of Le Lutin De Merde.

I did something like that once.
"So...the dragon has my sword now." "No shit! Why did you throw it at her?!"

I think "le lutin merdeux" translates more like "shitty/crappy goblin" than "shit goblin". I could be wrong, though, as it's been a while since I've had to use French, so I'm very much out of practice. I wish my maternal grandfather would get a facebook account, so I could ask him which sounds the most accurate. edit: Wait, I'm confusing "merdeux" with "merdique". Blah, brain isn't cooperating with me right now. If I'm remembering correctly, "merdeux" can be an adjective or a noun -- so, either "shitty" or "shit" (as in, "You god damn little shit!"). "Le lutin de merde" still sounds more accurate to me, though. "Tete de merde" translates into "shithead", so I'd imagine that it would be the same for "shit goblin".

Le lutin de merde should be Sarko's new nickname. Fits to a tee!

I have lived in France for almost 9 years and remark:
Lutin can be anything from a goblin (or hob goblin - hob being the place for cooking) poltergeist, whatever goes bump in the night
Merdeux would tend to mean 'shitty', where as 'de merde' can indicate made of shit.
My favoured translations, therefore would be Lutin de Merde.
Connerie comes from 'con' which has an extremely rude meaning, although it is used a lot in the common language, But foreigners, who don't get all the nuances, find it best best to avoid it.

As thanks (or perhaps punishment) for helping me out, I give you the first paragraph of my story, entitled The Legend of Le Lutin De Merde.
