Apologies if this has been shown to the board members before (I did a prelim search, but couldn't find anything; considering how old the vid is, I'm sure more than a few of y'all have seen it), but there's this robot, called Jules, that is supposed to mimic human expressions and conversation.
At around the 1:30 mark, I started silent screaming. Yes, zir speech was scripted, but the 'interaction' with the baby...*shudder*

Speech needs to flow a bit more naturally, but that's pretty cool.

Was I the only one who saw the name Jules as this thread's title, and immediately thought it was something related to Pulp Fiction?
*laughs as he pictures someone named James actually being able to bark at this thing, "DON'T FUCKIN' 'JIMMY' ME, JULES!"* ;D

Haha. "I love you as much as an artificial intelligence can at this stage in technological evolution." I love it!
I wonder if there's anything lurking behind the statements, any kind of nascent self-awareness or personhood. Classic problem, I suppose.

I want to know how much of that speech was algorithmic, the intonation was really very good all things considered; I'd be disappointed if it was just fed to the machine.

In that synthetic voice. "ENGLISH, MOTEHR FUCKER, DO YOU SPEAK IT!" In the baby's face.

What I can find of this guy's robots leads me to believe it was not just fed to the machine, he works on conversational and empathic AI. TED talk by him

It occurs to me that if this technology advances fast enough, within our lifetimes we could have computer games that actually love the user. And of course the applicability to domestic robots is obvious, especially sexy robots. But, then, if we give our robots emotions and personality, how do we prevent them from developing personality disorders?

I'd assume that personality disorders are not inherently part of the "personality" package, but artefacts of how our flesh computers work.
One would hope that AI scientists will not start just adding personality to machines without understanding the code that causes that personality. One would hope.

It isn't clear that our personalities aren't similar artifacts, although probably emergent rather than misfiring. Yes. I'm sure this is how things will go in that regard. Definitely.

It isn't clear that our personalities aren't similar artifacts, although probably emergent rather than misfiring. Possibly. But it should still be possible to program a personality without leaving the wiring that causes personality disorders. If one goes about it the smart and cautious way instead of throwing around code and seeing what happens. We're doomed, aren't we. I know there's at least some AI scientists who emphasise the importance of not creating sentient machines without first understanding how they work. As in, "we're all gonna die otherwise." The question is whether they'll get there first.

But it should still be possible to program a personality without leaving the wiring that causes personality disorders. If one goes about it the smart and cautious way instead of throwing around code and seeing what happens. We're doomed, aren't we. Well, yes, but my point was mostly that if personalities are emergent, it's entirely plausible that the malfunction that leads to disorders is itself an emergent property of that property. Personalities require so much complexity to exist that you cannot reduce the probability of malfunction to zero without eliminating the personality. On the other hand, machine personalities could possibly shed a lot of light on our own... but by then we'll be in The Matrix. There were scientists who argued that the atomic bomb could have set the atmosphere on fire and extinguished all life on Earth. Obviously it didn't, but the possibility didn't stop us. Which is part of why America is the greatest nation on Earth: we take the risks with other people's lives because we can. On the other hand, if anybody's going to build a sentient robot, it will be a Japanese sex toy firm. Which, if you think about it, could doom humanity just as thoroughly as murderbots.
