Posting this here because... well, it's Preaching and Worship.
So, today's Ash Wednesday. I'm celebrating Lent for a variety of reasons (it's also really fun), so I'm giving up chocolate and swearing. Anyone celebrate Lent here?
Or argue about it. That's also acceptable.

In Australia, Ash Wednesday commemorates the day a big-ass bush fire turned half of the east coast to ash. Not sure what that adds to the thread, but it seemed like a good idea to mention that.

Lent's always fascinated me, but, while I'm not of this particular persuasion, religiously speaking, I've wanted to try it for years. It sounds like one of those "easy to say, hard to do" kind of things.

I remember taking part in lent. Once I forgot it was lent and dad gave my crap for eating a ham sandwich. Now nobody in my family pays attention or really gives a shit, even my dad who's a devout catholic.

My mom is trying to stop me from eating meat on Fridays. Otherwise I'm not doing anything

When I was still living at home after I came out that I was non-religious, my parents were still trying to get me to not eat meat on Ash Weds. or Fridays during lent. There was only one year that I really took the not eating meat and giving something up seriously. I actually gave up video games, and made it most of the way through before I faltered.

I don't celebrate it, but I wish anyone who does good luck in sticking to their goals.

I have to give up meat during Lent in order to keep the peace at home.
I don't understand why my family insists on observing Lent when they haven't been to mass for over a decade. Surely God would be more angry at 10+ years of missed tithing than eating meat on a Friday.
It's not that I care about giving up meat, because meat honestly isn't a huge part of my diet. On a typical week I have several meatless days. It's just the notion that I have to "give it up" in order to avoid having my mom get all crazy and telling me how I'm going to go to hell.

I gave up Catholicism for Lent ages ago... haven't taken it back up, since.
So, I'm in the clear.

But it shows once more the stupity of religion.

There's only 10 catholics in Finland, and we don't know where we left them, so I don't know what they're giving up for Lent. as a staunch atheist/maybe sort of anti-theist I shall continue to give up nothing to superstition.

I wish I had the willpower for Lent. I just do not.
