The, uh...the 'current' Prophet got killed by his harem of Virgins, huh? That is awesome...but Nehemiah should've been taken out before any of that shit could happen. Quickly, FSTDT virgins, to the Huckabee! Well, I always did want my first time to be special...

This, this is why fundies scare me. Yeah, I know he was just being semi-sarcastic, but there was a hint of truth in there.

There's more than a hint of truth in there. The gun part is obviously not literal, but he does want to "put the bible back in schools". Since a lot of people can't afford anything other than public schooling, he may as well be holding them at gunpoint.

Well I am lucky I don't live over there, because if Palin and Huckabee take over/desecrate the place I for one would definitely end up getting shot if it was a choice between that and David fucking Barton!
The tattooed dudes do realise that the practice is clearly forbidden in their religion, right?

So we've got all these potential Repub candidates falling over themselves to portray themselves as having a more extreme Jesusland agenda than the others...which with any luck will go too far and one of them will so discredit the ideology that it blows up in their faces in '12.

Who was it that said that fascism would come to the US wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross (or bible, I forget)? Pretty sure s/he hit the nail on the head. Sinclair Lewis. That should be 1935, surely?

Sinclair Lewis: Time Traveler. I'm starting to wonder if Heinlein was. His work is dated as hell in a lot of ways, and in certain of his works, he has a dubious flirtation with the far-right-wing, but some of his novels and stories were strangely prescient. He wrote "If This Goes On" in 1940. It fairly accurately predicts the rise of anti-intellectualism, the religious right, and its dependence on mass media. Even the dates he picked are sort of scary-close. Grant you that it also has us with colonists on Mars and Venus by the early 2000s, but still...

From what I've read, a lot of the opposition to FDR (who was president for most of the 30s and 40s) was similar to the opposition to Obama. There were even protest groups that called them selves Tea Partiers.
My point being that a lot of the things happening today had clear precedents in the 30s and 40s, so predicting them isn't that impressive.
