With the imminent demise of Stargate: Universe, Game of Thrones has now become my new favorite TV series. I know I'm not the only one on here who likes it - the .gif in tolpuddlemartyr's sig is taken from the second episode. I've read about half of the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire, so I know some things, but not everything.
So, here's where you can discuss the show!

I predict that inevitably some fans are going to be upset by some of the things that didn't translate into the adaptation. Hopefully not to the extent that LOTR fans bewailed the invisibility of Tom Bombadil or grumbled about the Balrogs wings. Am I the only one that thinks that Game Of Thrones, the HBO series has a lot in common with Peter Jacksons LOTR in terms of visuals (beyond the inclusion of Sean Bean). I'm thinking medieval fashions, weaponary etc. Totally different stories of course, but am I the only one who thought the producers of Game of Thrones borrowed heavily from Peter Jacksons LOTR? Not that it's necessarily a bad thing.

Add me to the list of fans. Speaking of borrowing from other sources, there was a shot in last night's episode that panned passed a rack full of swords, all of which were replicas of the one Mel Gibson used in Braveheart. (I am a very observant geek)
I haven't read any of the books, and I don't plan to any time soon, mostly because I want to be surprised. I sure hope Tyrian doesn't get killed off. He's my favorite character.

(I am a very observant geek) I haven't read any of the books, and I don't plan to any time soon, mostly because I want to be surprised. I sure hope Tyrian doesn't get killed off. He's my favorite character. It's Tyrion, and he is one of my favorites as well, and my father thinks the same too. One of my major criticisms is that it seems that some of the scenes that I could have swore took place during nightfall in the novel were shot in full daylight in the miniseries. I need to dig out my copy of the novel since I don't know for sure, but the time of day, for me, helped set the mood of the scenes in question. Otherwise, I am pleasantly surprised as to how the miniseries as a whole has come together so far. One of my fears about a potential film adaptation was that the dynamics of the plot would be logistically difficult to adapt to film, but I may be proven wrong. The miniseries format (ten episodes all together) seems to be allowing for a sufficient adaption so far. From what I understand, the budget for this season is significantly less than that of each LotR film, so I am quite impressed with what they were able to get out of it so far. However, the good news is that HBO was convinced to renew the series for a second session after only the first episode was aired, so I am excited to see what they will do with the inevitably larger budget that they will have next time around.

My favorites are Arya, Daenerys, Tyrion, and Ned. Least favorites are Viserys and the other Lannisters.

Tyrion hands down, sharp as a tack with a sense of humor drier than the Gibson Desert. Love the little bastard!

Tyrion and Syrio Forrel for me. And Arya since she's utterly adorable. Tyrion just gets better and better as the series progresses.

I didn't list Syrio Forrel, as he's a minor character, albeit pure awesome.

My favorites are Arya, Daenerys, Tyrion, and Ned. Least favorites are Viserys and the other Lannisters. Same here, but I would also add Jorah Mormont, Bran Stark, Samwell Tarly, Jon Snow, and Varys.

I was shocked when I got to that part in the book. But it was a good shocked. I wonder if we're going to hear these complaints every time a major character gets killed off?

Say what?! I wonder if we're going to hear these complaints every time a major character gets killed off? You mean, are people going to pretend as if there doesn't exist a set of books that reveal, step by step, every plot point for all forthcoming seasons? Probably. From an idiot EW reader. “Most of you who think this was some sort of brilliant move or something don’t understand the difference between a book audience and a TV audience,” argued EW reader Tamcamry. “TV audiences need to invest in characters. Most of the other characters I don’t care much about. While the show will probably still appeal to the ‘wow’ crowd, it’s mass appeal just got beheaded." /\ l l l
What needs to happen to said EW reader. Edit: I suppose tolpuddlemartyr's sig also illustrates my point as well.

There are people for whom Ned is their favorite character? I find this confusing.

There are people who think a character played by Sean Bean can get through something alive? I find this confusing.
