Hanging your clothes outside to dry gives them a great smell, and you can forgo drying, but NOT the washing. Just sun bleaching them really doesn't clean a damned thing.

That's intriguing. But really hard for me to go there. I get it, but ... I just couldn't do it.

Oh. If you go to thrift stores, casually look through the pockets of jackets and boxes and such; I hear people often don't bother to clean them out before they donate them and there's money in them thar ugly clothes!!

Well, I guess I was hung up on dumpster diving for food. I'm wasn't really thinking about people throwing away furniture they're tired of, for example.
Got any good examples?

From time to time my grandpa buys paper plates if he doesn't feel like doing dishes. And not just those small little things it's one of those great big honking two foot high bag.

Fuck yeah, I found a good Manhasset music stand by one last year!! And a (slightly banged up) DVD/book shelf. Books. A music book. Cat bed. Bundt cake pan. Milk crates; I put a rack on my bike and rigged the milk crate up on it. And yes, food. Starbrewer and I have gone out dumpster diving a few times; last weekend we found a boatload of bread, sliced and bagged even. Check this shit out: That's just what I took. We have also gotten donuts from the gas station. And we haven't died yet. ;D There's also a higher-end grocery store that we're watching for fruits and veggies.

I think I'll stick to taking shop classes in school for furniture. Although I suck at woods class so everything is gonna be made of cold, hard metal. Cause I'm amazing at welding.

One of my friends said that basically, not using detergent except on special occasions (either when your clothes are REALLY DIRTY or just every once in a while) and hanging your clothes to dry outside instead of using the dryer would get a similar effect to standard washing-and-drying. I haven't verified. Anyone know? Don't skip the detergent.

Aqua: Hm.... still scared about the food. The other stuff rocks though. Oh, and I might have mentioned to you on another thread that I got an antique baby grand piano that was basically headed to the dump. If you recall. So I think that counts maybe as "dumpster rescuing?" I'm waiting until I've got the top fixed so I can prop it up and take a picture -- just for you.

Sure there's a shitload more than the liquid stuff but I don't think anyone enjoys scrapping it out of the box.

Oh, and I forgot about the four card tables, which I gave to my mom and she put in the barn. ^_^

Hanging clothes out to dry is indeed a cheaper alternative. However, if anyone in the family has pollen allergies then hanging something on the line is just going to make them sick.

A friend and I once made a gaming table using nothing more than an old wooden door (he was remodeling his house) and some scrap lumber my dad's boss no longer wanted. We just had to drill a few holes for the nails to go through since the door was so thick.
