Got sent this by a fundie after using the old "I'd like to buy your daughter according to Leviticus" line. Just thought I'd post it here to get some reaction to it.

No, we do not pick and choose what we want from the Old Testament, but in humility before God and deep reverence for His word, we do try to carefully discern and understand that which we are to obey in our day and that which had special meaning only for another time and another people.

I get so tired of this line. It feels like they're saying "We don't pick and choose. We're just selective about what verses we follow - that's totally different!"

And from this particular quote I also get the feeling of them saying "Yes, we do tend to follow the verses that tell us to discriminate against certain groups of people, and that's what makes me holier than thou! Can't you see how humble and pious I am when I decide that it's right to call homosexuals an abomination but ignore the rest of the book?"

At first glance, I thought the title read, "Why fundies can eat $#!+ and die. I guess it's not much different. I love that, "We can't pick or choose; we'll just be humble before God by bashing others." (Basically what Zabimaru said).

So, the only reason homosexuality is condmened and not eating non-fin, scaley (and not shellfish, as you gay-activists so insist is in the Bible to push your persecuting agenda) is because Paul (a nutcase who was worshipped after he fell and hit his head) said so.

Yeah, they can truly eat $#!+ and die for all I care.

OK, point by point...

This argument is part of the “gay talking points about the Bible”

As if there were no contradictions in the Bible before the gay rights movement started...

(Note: actually, to be accurate, the word “shellfish” is never in the Bible, so whenever a person uses that term, you know they got it from activist gay’s talking points rather than from reading the Bible themselves. Leviticus says you shall only eat things from the sea that have both scales or fins (11:9-11) ).

Which excludes shellfish! Twist the words however you want, the Bible still forbids eating shellfish.

The question becomes, do the Kosher laws (those which govern which food is clean and which is unclean for Jews) come under the moral, civil or religious laws? While it is obvious from both history and tradition that Christians have never thought these dietary laws applied to them, we must also look for direction in the Bible itself.

If the Bible is the Word of God, why wouldn't the kosher laws apply to Christians? Aren't kosher laws rules that God wants people to live by? Why else would He give those laws?

Originally, the gospel went to the Jews and the converts to Christianity continued to abide by the Jewish religious laws. But in time, the gospel was taken “to all the nations,” meaning, of course, the Gentiles (i.e. the non-Jews). Once the Gentiles began to convert, the question became: Must these Gentiles get circumcised?

Again, why shouldn't they. Circumcision is a way of showing your loyality to God and God's loyality back.

The apostle Paul stood strongly on these issues as he was the apostle chosen of God to take the gospel to the Gentiles.

Wait, what happened to Peter? Didn't Jesus say He would build his church with Peter as the foundation? Why does anyone care about Paul?

He wrote entire books (e.g. Galatians) to tell us that we are not under the Old Covenant of Jewish law.

Whether he wrote them or not is widely debated.

However, he also made it clear we are now under “the law of Christ” which is the requirement that we love one another (Galatians 6:2, 5:14, 1 Corinthians 9:21, etc).

Which is a strong argument against hating gays.

Not only does the New Testament teach that Gentiles believers are not required to live under the Jewish ceremonial and religious laws, it also reaffirms that homosexuality is sin. Acts 15:20 tells us that prohibitions of fornication do carry over to the New Testament Gentiles.

Fornication is sex outside marriage. If Christians weren't hypocrits they would fight for laws making heterosexual intercourse outside marriage a crime. Also, by banning gays from marrying, they are FORCING gays to commit fornication. Allow same-sex marriage = stop gays from fornicating.

Romans 1:26-27 refers to homosexuality as “degrading passions.”

Of course, those same verses say GOD FORCED IT TO HAPPEN! God caused the people in question to become homosexual. What kind of God forces something to happen and then condemns those He caused it to happen to?

Therefore, it is legitimate to conclude that the Old Testament condemnations of homosexual behavior still apply to all people today whereas the Kosher food laws do not.

What about the civil laws from the OT? Why aren't Christians protesting to allow sex outside marriage to become a crime punishable by death?
