Whether you watch the show or not, what are your thoughts on the home-schooling, 18 kid family? Personally, it truly is like watching a trainwreck. The mom looks happy and content, yes, but she seems just the tad bit brainwashed, IMHO. The dad cracks me up and the kids sadden me, only because if it's true what they say about 1 in 10 kids are born gay, then they might have atleast 2 kids that are gay.
What are your thoughts?

I will never watch that show, it's just wrong to kick out that many kids. Plus I'm not big on reality tv in general.

To be honest, I dislike them intensely. They make me kinda sick. For one thing, it's environmentally irresponsible to the N-th degree; it's also impractical. Kids need their parents for love, support, and education. There is NO WAY IN HELL that that woman has time for all of those kids. In fact, she doesn't actually raise them herself, the girls bring up their siblings and take over feeding, bathing, dressing, and educating them so mom can go off and get pregnant again. That cannot possibly be healthy. And then you get into the whole homeschooling thing--I have nothing against homeschooling as long as it's actual SCHOOLING and not a thinly-veiled religious brainwashing, which is what the Duggar kids get. They're not exposed to ANYTHING outside of their own little family world, and they undoubtedly have no idea that other options for LIFE exist beyond growing up and having babies babies babies babies just like mom did. They have no practical education, no real skills except what their parents let them do (which, in fact, is not much), and no tools to cope with the REAL WORLD should they ever find themselves in it.
It's an all-around sick situation, and the fact that the entire family is celebrity and WORSHIPED by some people just makes me *headdesk* like crazy. THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING, PEOPLE. THIS IS NOT WHAT WE WANT TO BE!

I've never seen it, but I have a feeling if I did, I'd go with "trainwreck."

THIS IS NOT WHAT WE WANT TO BE! Yeah the thing about the siblings raising the younger one's is what sticks out the most. It's sad because the parents essentially CAN'T take care of all these kids, yet keep having them. I've noticed that The Discover Channel has most recently started glorifying and giving shows to families that have a ton of kids. Now, there's nothing wrong with having a lot of kids, but just because a family was irresponsible and popped out 18 doesn't mean they get their own show.

It's not that they were irresponsible about it--they just don't believe in fucking birth control. (God doesn't like it, apparently.) Having a lot of kids is an irresponsible thing to do all around. There's no reason to do it. People often like to point out that large families were hte norm back in the day, without considering that back then people had massive broods because they a) needed the free farm labour, or b) because out of seven kids, two would survive to adulthood. I normally try to keep my prejudices out of other people's business, but this is one thing that just rubs me the wrong way.
What's even worse about Mrs Duggar is that she's not physically capable of having kids anymore. Not really--she has to ave her cervix sewn shut every time she's pregnant so she can carry the pregnancy to term. Otherwise it'll fall right out. She's had so many kids that her body just can't hold onto them anymore. Also, she's over 40, so now she's starting to take enormous risks in having kids that they'll be born with birth defects. They have to live thriftily as it is--something tells me they wouldn't be able to afford it financially or emotionally to have a kid who has a severe mental or physical handicap.
But the thing that always, ALWAYS upsets me is that there are CHILDREN RAISING CHILDREN in this house. That is NOT their responsibility. Helping out is a child's responsibility--helping out to within the things that their age and maturity will allow. But it is a PARENT'S responsibility to raise the children, not the other siblings. I don't give a shit HOW old they are--if you want to have your own kids, you get to raise them. Full stop, end of story. It makes me really angry that they're forced to do this.

What galls me is that they depend on the generosity and attention of people who have made more responsible decisions about child-raising, then act like they are superior--God's special favorites--because the wife has kid after kid without a break. To hell with them. I'm not watching them. They can fade away from sight and watch as some of the kids (completely justifiably) rebel.
I hope Nadya Suleiman doesn't get her own show, too.

I watch it all the time. My roommate and I sit glued to the television when it comes on. I can't stand them, but I can't look away.
One of the things that really bothers me is definitely the siblings raising each other thing.
I also hate that all the girls where skirts because they think it's pleasing to the lord or some such nonesense.
My favorite Duggar is probably Jinger. She always looks really pissed off when they go on trips. I think she will be the first to break away and wear pants.
Did anyone see the episode where the oldest kid got engaged? They had never kissed because they wanted to stay pure until the wedding, and have their first kiss be their wedding kiss. They even asked their parents if it's okay to hold hands. They can't go any where without a chaperone, which means their siblings tag along all the time. AND, one chaperone is not enough. They must have two chaperones in case one is not paying close enough attention.

Yeah. The Duggars get their house tax-free because they're a 'church' (yeah, I dunno either), and get massive amounts of donations and money from television shows and specials. Their house was built from donations and most of their appliances were donated, as well. And they STILL have to live thriftily. If they were just a normal family living by their own means, they wouldn't be able to afford to live the life they do. They'd be..... I dunno, they'd be selling their kid's kidneys in order to pay for groceries.
Nadya Suleiman actually has astonishingly high disapproval. Fortunately. She's BEGGED for her own show, for TV appearances, endorsements, ANYTHING that anybody will throw at her. Because other people with massive broods get TV shows, she figured it'd happen for her, as well, and that she'd get rich from it, but everybody seems to think she's such a stupid selfish BITCH for doing what she did that for the most part she's being either ignored or outright FLAMED for her crap. I think this needs to be a more prolific trend--we have GOT to stop rewarding people (the Duggars, John and Kate, and the rest of their ilk) for breeding irresponsibly.

Most of you already know how I feel about this subject but I suppose it bears repeating. I hate them all. OK I kinda feel for the kids because they didn't have any say in it; it's not their fault their parents are retarded. I'm glad I don't have cable; if I did I'd probably still watch them, out of sheer morbid curiosity. But we (society) need to stop rewarding this kind of behavior. I'm sick and tired of the rampant breeding and baby worshiping that goes on; having as many kids as you can in the name of your religion is ridiculous and irresponsible. >

This is completely true. Also, since Michelle Duggar would likely have died in childbirth, half of the kids (and that's an old picture--there are only *counts* fourteen kids in that picture and there are eighteen now... ugh, ONLY fourteen) wouldn't even exist. There might only be... eight or nine, and of them several would have died from exactly what the picture describes. Smallpox, polio, stillborn, and others.
