It never really was about guns. That's far too stupid to make any sense, even for my cynical ass. He was about to uncover something far bigger than he could comprehend. You win the thread.

That was essentially my life. I would never want that for my kid, so look, I GET where you're coming from. To an extent. But when its that age, they aren't going to remember for more than maybe a year. Its not gonna follow the kid like it would in high school. I still feel like it should be up to them. I'm not my hypothetical kid, so I dunno what level of confidance he or she has. Maybe they're the shy Rolo or the Genki Girl, and that dictates how brave they want to be. But again, the OPTION needs to be there, and I need to be OPEN to it. Seconding all of this. I had no friends between 2nd grade and my junior year in COLLEGE. Classmates either picked on me or ignored me, every day, and then wondered why I had poor social skills. I loved learning, but I quickly learned to hate school because those other kids would be there. I didn't have my little brother as a social crutch, the Internet wasn't mainstream enough for me to have heard of it yet, and I was young enough to be very obviously less mature than any of my classmates. After my 9th birthday, I gave up on parties, because nobody seemed to want to have fun with me at all, they just came for the free cake or because their moms had asked them to. I was, for more than half my life, the "weird girl." Weird for being accelerated, weird for being a tomboy, weird for liking books, weird for thinking oldies stations weren't horrible just because the songs were old. I was even ostracized at a school for gifted and talented teens. I was outcast from the outcastes! And you know what? It wouldn't have been any worse if I'd worn little boys' clothes, or if I'd been a little boy in a dress. Maybe they would have beaten me, sure. But even that's not as bad as being an unperson, like I was. Hel, I would have killed for that kind of attention. As for the menu thing...wow. There's a difference between authoritative parenting and authoritarian parenting. Children will understand that cake for dinner is a bad idea if you explain it to them. I understood at 4 why it's a bad idea for small children to cross the street without holding hands with an adult. But there is no satisfactory answer you can give a child for "why can't I wear dresses? Girls wear them all the time!" Even as a child, I was willing to accept rules that were explained to me, even if it kept me from doing what I wanted to do. The rules I rankled against were the ones that weren't explained, or worse, were explained by "if you do that again, you won't be able to sit down for a week." Kids do understand that "because that's the way things are done" is kind of a bullshit reason.

That's because genitals are icky and calling someone a cunt is just plain rude. We aren't discriminating against gender or anything else either. I agreed with you on this subject up to "genitals are icky." Genitals are awesome! They only get icky when they're infected or not kept clean. BTW, Cestle: What about kilts? They look like pleated skirts, but are made for men. Would you let your son run around in a kilt? If so, how is this any different from a dress or skirt? Also...I don't have a front yard. I have a catwalk in front of my apartment, and at ground level I have a parking lot. Can we please not bring up front yards, because I feel weird being part of the argument when I don't even have one.

Um, no. www.tektonics.org/copycathub.htmlI came across this site trying to look for paralles between Egyptian/Greek gods and Jesus, and realized that they were barely any. And I read the Egyptian Myths. Isis was definitely NOT a virgin. I find better paralles between Jesus and heroes from Jewish Mythology, like Moses and Samson. Although Gnosticism was likely the precursor to Orthodox Christianity. Ohhh one whole site. Oh and I can't take that site seriously with that layout. I'm going to need more to go on than one site like that. Considering a lot of things I've found say Isis was a virgin. Sorry, but the whole Jesus/God thing is based on Sun Gods, which Egypt has so there are definitely parallels where that is concerned. Technically, Isis gave Osiris a golden penis when he was brought back to life and they couldn't find his real one. So depending on how you define virginity, and whether you view a golden prosthetic phallus as a sex toy, it really could go either way, since she's said to have gotten pregnant with Horus via that golden penis. Frankly, whether or not Isis was a virgin is irrelevant, as there are other similarities between Jesus and other gods. Lexi, for a complete rundown with loads of cited sources, might I recommend POCM? I feel the need to make this point and then go back to lurking in obscurity, but... It would have been impossible, if I remember correctly, for the celts to have inspired Christian mythology, as that whole business with the Celts would have happened after the business with Jesus. Technically the Celts existed for at least a couple millennia both before and after Jesus. Julius Caesar (died 47 BCE) and the ancient Greeks (several centuries earlier) had run-ins with the Celts. However, by Jesus's time the Celts had been driven back as far as Scotland and Ireland, leaving the Gaulish, Briton, and Germanic tribes behind (it is believed by historians that these tribes were subject to the Celts, without being themselves Celtic). This, so hard. All surviving Celtic legends are about Ireland and the surrounding areas. There is no evidence that Celts ever lived in Palestine, and they wouldn't have been welcome in Rome. Thus, the early Christians would have had little to no contact with the Celtic people. This lack of contact is further evidenced by the fact that Christianity did not reach Ireland or Scotland, the last Celtic holdouts, until fairly late in the game (St. Patrick is the first known Christian to have set foot on Irish soil). EDIT: I've tried to fix that stupid link about 50 times and it won't work. Just copy pocm.info into your address bar.

I should download this. It'll be even more hilarious than The Answers Book. And extraneous: It's spelled "intimate."

Then God would not be omnipotent, as there would be something he cannot do. Fundie quote: "God is testing us" This quote is oxymoronic. An omnipotent, all-seeing, all-knowing being ALREADY KNOWS what the result of any "test" would be and what our reaction would be. Thus if He-She-It finds it necessary to test, He-She-It is not omnipotent. No, technically omniscience and omnipotence are two different things.

A five-year-old is singing the lyrics "I need a man who can keep me satisfied."
A five-year-old.
What.

That's different from the "no dresses" example, though. You're hardly banning your kid from wearing plaid in that scenario.

I wonder how they were able to secure the domain names, I would of figured they would of been secured long before people could get their hands on them, but maybe I am wrong. This is why so many universities and other places that have nothing to do with porn are scrambling to buy up any .xxx URL with a name even remotely similar to the one they use. It's a pity the White House failed in that regard.

What about it? Believing in a deity that is coterminous with the universe is still believing in one deity Just for that, I'm gonna go around believing in demigods and only demigods. Which ones?

Cait, you have done a wonderful thing. You just made that girl's day, if not her entire life, that little bit brighter.

Does it have adverse effects on people and pets too, or would this be a safe antibacterial to use around the house?
