anyone know why it is that almost all converts to islam take on an arabic name?
the only answer i can think of is that people have decided and arab=muslim which is ridiculous. so any ideas?

No idea, although one of the key characteristics of Islamic names is that it is paternal, not familial (i.e. Osama bin Laden literally means Osama, son of Laden). Muslims also prize the Arabic script and language as the language of God, so it would just as well be a way for Allah to understand their names. *shrug*

I don't know. The belief by some groups the Qur'an can't be read in any other language might have something to do with it.

^^^ I think you hit it on the head there . Muslim is to Arabic as Southern Baptist is to KJV.
Though I always thought 'ibn' meant 'son of' in Arabic.

Both "ibn" and "bin" mean the same thing. Whether you use one or the other depends on where it falls in the name. I *THINK* if it's at the beginning, then it's "ibn". If it's more towards the middle, it's "bin".

Actually, the real reason is closer to the reason why nuns and monks change their name . It's to make a psychological break with the past and to give a new identity as a follower of that religion. Same reason why many destructive cults do it too.
