What really pissses me off is when the books get banned with no proof whatsoever. Some idiot cries and moans to the school board and suddenly the book's pulled.
"Winnie the Pooh promotes witchcraft!" pulled.
"Humpty Dumpty promotes pornography!" pulled.
And how the fuck does promoting good vs. evil = hurting religion when religion is all about good vs. evil?
Ironically HP Lovecraft's books about 'evil gods' and demonic cults were rarely banned. I wonder why.

Banned doesn't mean they are not allowed in any library ever, it means that people challenge them and they may be removed from one school or one library. |

And if you're going to ban Tom Sawyer, you should at least be consistent and ban The Pigman by Paul Zindel.
Also, a child who gets punished for doing the wrong thing is a bad example. I could understand this line of reasoning if Harriet got away with her spying, but....no.
And...wow, they banned The Wizard of Oz for reasons other than the blatant communist propaganda? Holy fuck!

Well... to be fair, all I remember about the story was the repeated hypnosis/mind control scenes, pursuant to my fetish.

I found out last week that our high-school English classes were having "banned books" week. Our class was called down to the library to discuss the event, and the librarian started off by reading a children's picture book called "And Tango Makes Three" out loud to the entire class, elementary school-style. Afterwards she explained that this was the most frequently banned book in the year of 2009. My high school's administration had the balls to have a children's book about homosexuality be read aloud to every English class in the school. Afterwards they explained that each of us were to choose from a selection of banned novels to do a several-week-long project on. One of the choices? The Diary of Anne Frank. |

I'm pretty sure the grasshopper drank brandy. Not that it's instantly going to corrupt children, but still a reference to alcohol. Fantastic Mr Fox is probably worse, since Mr Fox sings about how cider will cheer up his wife. |

Maybe you have to be on drugs to imagine a giant peach? Also... uh. "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble," by William Steig William Steig's children's story about a donkey who gets into mishaps because of a magic pebble he found may seem pretty harmless. But it faced trouble because the book's illustrations of animals in clothes include images of pigs dressed as policemen. Really? Really? C'mon, I hate policemen being called pigs more than a lot of people but I see no reason for it to be banned. |

A Light in the Attic?
I read a lot of Shel Sylverstein's poems back in grade four for English (and because my teacher is a huge fan), but promoting violence in disrespect? Maybe I didn't catch it due to my age, but I'm quite confident the lot of it was quite the opposite.
