Okay guys lay off. Enough people have mentioned it. Being the geeky person I am I'd write about the similarities in X-men powers to real things. Like Spyke shoots out needle-like bone. stuff like that. ...Seriously? Fucking comic book superpowers? You know when it comes to serious scientific papers, that sort of subject material is a little, er, less than ideal, shall we say, right?

You gotta admit, it would be a fun paper to write.

Yeah, but it's more of an English assignment than a science one. I'd be hesitant to use that even for low-level courses. Even if the teacher is okay with it, it's kind of a fine line between what you can & can't be srs bsns about without losing points.

I wasn't advocating for it as an actual essay topic, just saying that it would be fun as, like, a blog entry or something. Crazy Lithp, you and your drugs and your makeout parties.

You guys do know I wasn't actually talking about mentioning the comic book itself but rather how possible it is for humans to obtain the 'powers' that other animals have right?
The only thing is that the inspiration would come from the comic book but I certainly wouldn't mention it.
In other words, hyper-speed evolution like in Star Trek because you went warp 10.
EDIT- probably should have made it more clear but I was tired... ah well. Ya live ya learn.

You guys do know I wasn't actually talking about mentioning the comic book itself but rather how possible it is for humans to obtain the 'powers' that other animals have right? Depending on what exactly you mean by 'obtain', and 'powers', but probably the paper will consist of the single word 'Not'. You're not exactly helping your case by mentioning 'Threshold'. The content of that episode is a travesty beyond all that is holy, doesn't deserve to be called 'science-fiction' & and anyone who has a passing understanding of evolution is likely to be getting a stroke from the stupidity.

You're taking what I said too literally.
How about this. It was once thought porcupines could throw their quills at attackers. It's considered a 'power' yet could still be grounded in our physical world. We know now that porcupines don't do this. But, if we're that interested in the idea we could look into what it would take for that bit of evolution to happen (multiple theories could crop up as to the use, not just defense). We know that there are bugs and other things that do throw parts of their physical bodies at their attacker.
This thereby means you got inspiration from a completely different subject often met with derision but you still looked at it with a serious eye. Does that make more sense?
But hey, I could have gone with the trend of the hundred posts that simply said that he needs to invest in a grammar and spelling checker.
If all else fails, go with the original idea. Or with Vene's stuff.

That's less lolworthy but more gray. How would you try to spin that? Gene therapy? Natural evolution? See, now you have to worry about accidently promoting outlandish ideas with only a tenuous basis in fact.
Although you have excellent ideas for Science Channel specials.

Well. I'm not going to write the damn thing nor flesh it out since it isn't my assignment. Also, evolution does some seemingly odd things. It would be more natural rather than gene therapy but then you'd have to look at the various reasons as to why that specific part cropped up. As well as whether you want to focus on Homo Sapiens Sapiens or a different species like the aforementioned porcupine and merely look at how long it might take for the real quill throwing to work. But eh. Writing papers was never my strong suit.

I could totally get behind writing the "origin story" of "animal super powers."

I'd rather write about an unusual, but real, phenomenon then I would about something made up. Like the sandbox tree and its exploding fruit.

That would be what I'm talking about, only with a plant instead of an animal.

Or what about prions or prion diseases? I find those to be fascinating.
