Fundy Fred Phelps (the guy who protests at funerals of gays, liberals, soldiers, and people with AIDS) is banned from entering Britain as he has been placed on a list of people "fostering extremism or hatred." Now if only we could ban him from Kansas as well! www.kansas.com/news/breaking/story/799929.html

Phelps got IRL B&. ;D
Now that that's out of my system, good for Britain. I wish we could ban him from the US.

Isn't Michael Savage also on the list of people not to get anywhere near GB? Seems like I just saw that on Yahoo today...

I guess just like it's easier to say somebody can't come over and visit you at your home than it is to boot them out of your house in the first place? I don't know. I'd love to expel a few people from here, though.

When will the time come when we just BAN THEM FROM LIFE? We could launch them to another planet. Another solar system. A black hole. ANYTHING. Please, our planet suffers enough!

We need to pull a Heavens Gate. Think we can convince them that Jesus is hiding in a space ship behind the moon? We could release "secret government documents" showing that the Apollo astronauts found millions of "fags" living inside the Moon...

Although I find Michael Savage to be grating and I have no sympathy for The Phelps, this sort of thing goes against my belief in the value of Freedom of Speech. I think Savage is just in it for the money. He was friends with Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Is there even a market for Savage's ideas in the U.K.? , and could his words incite riots? What The Phelps do, could cause trouble, but if Michael Savage visits another country, he would sort of be out of his element, and banning him from merely trying to enter, seems like taking it too far.
Yeah, yeah, I know that guy in Tennessee who shot up that Unitarian Church had books written by Savage, but I don't think he has fans in Britain.

I value freedom of speech too much to support a ban of this sort on Fred Phelps and his followers. I worry about those guys, however: their blog has, in the past few months, gone from annoying to downright scary. With the exception of Phelps himself, I'm not convinced anyone in that church is bad, per se - just really, really fucked up. And he's dragging those people down with him.

Nobody's trying to stop them from saying what they want to say. They can spew all the hatred they want, but they--and everybody else--have to be prepared to accept the consequences of spreading their hateful messages. Some of those consequences are, "If you're going to keep saying such terrible, disgusting, hateful things, then we won't let you back in anymore."
