Do we need to make excuses for them? It seems we do, since you seem determined to paint the protestors as just as culpable as the 16 who were indicted. No, the protestors are culpable of supporting the indefensible. Which is different, but just as bad, as the original 16. Because every time someone posts a link to a story about blatant police corruption or abuse of power, someone else immediately starts making claims about how its an isolated incident, or its probably because the cop was stressed, or similar. No, not all cops are corrupt. As I said, those that aren't get nothing but respect from me. However, why people seem so determined to protect those that ARE corrupt by invoking the ones that aren't is quite simply beyond me.

Cops are people. They can be just as corrupt as anyone else.

LHM, you get this reaction because you have demonstrated multiple times that you believe every cop is bad until it's proven that they aren't. The rest of us would tend to believe that the vast majority are decent people, like the vast majority of people in any occupation, until they demonstrate that they are not.
The vast majority of cops being good does not excuse what these individuals did. However, what these few did does not justify branding entire jurisdictions (or the occupation as a whole) as corrupt.
I don't believe anyone here has actually defended the actions of a bad cop. What I see time and again is you using the actions of the few to speak ill of the motivation of the many, and others coming to the defense of those who have done no wrong.

I happily accept that most cops are clean. The cops in the incidents like this one, however, prove that not all cops are clean, and that, indeed, there appears to be an underlying culture within police forces around the world that a certain level of corruption is acceptible. I'm not posting this or similar articles to taint all cops. This is about corrupt cops. Nothing more than that. The recent thread where people were arguing that drug squad cops who planted drugs on innocent people and arrested them should be allowed to keep their jobs comes to mind.

I would really like to know more about the crimes leveled against them. I can understand cops supporting their fellows, many would probably believe that the allegations against their co-workers are false. I feel that we all don't have enough information about this situation.
Also, the part that one should remember is that only 16 were accused of these charges of corruption. The rest are just protesting the case. I doubt they agree with the crimes of ticket fixing, drugs and grand larceny but I wouldn't be surprised if the supporters feel those misdemeanors are being treated too heavily handed.
