Now I really feel dumb. For years I've been sending money to some guy named Schrödinger to help him support his cat. Especially since Schrodinger has been dead for about 50 years now.

One thing that has always confused me about this. How is "observe" defined?

Measured in one way or another -- we can't do this without interacting with the particles.

One thing that has always confused me about this. How is "observe" defined? Interact with, essentially. So despite what esoterics and New Agers say, a human mind is not required. Sunlight, for example, is sufficient.

How do you know? Have you seen him? As a matter of fact, I have his corpse in my living room.

Sunlight, for example, is sufficient. You should see philosophy students that get their hands on the word "observer" as used in physics. It's... it's horrifying. That poor word.

I've heard people try to use it as a basis for the argument that the physical universe is conscious, or controlled by a consciousness.

Quantum Mystics.
I can't believe there are enough people making up bullshit about how quantum physics supports magic that they actually have a term for it.

I can believe it. Anytime a branch science begins to enjoy mainstream attention, the charlatans come out to play.

But other than Social Darwinism, I don't know of anything even remotely like that. And Social Darwinism is nowhere near as crazy & reality revisionist.

Magnetism has been peddled as a miracle cure for decades. Some others: Psychic surgery; "mystics" who insist that "enlightened DNA" can have a quadruple/quintuple/sextuple/etc. helix; astrologers who claim that gravity & other forces from various celestial bodies are responsible for the zodiac personalities; the radiation "wellfullness" devices from the first half of the 20th century; and many more.

Schrödinger and Heisienberg are out for a drive when they get stopped by the cops. Sayeth the cop "Do you know how fast you were going?". Quoth Heisenberg "no, my good man, but I can tell you exactly where I was".
The cop figures he's dealing with a loon, and begins to search the car, asking them to pop the boot. "you sick fucks! You've been driving around with a dead cat in here".
"Yeah, NOW we are" says Schrödinger.
