Of course, at my age I usually start duels with "There can be only one!" and make sure to try and throw in "nuns, no sense of humor" or "I peed my kilt" in somewhere during the fight. I think I’m a bit more likely to go with, “They have a cave troll!”

Technically, they do this because they have ideas on what they're "supposed to do" with the toy, & have never been told that they aren't supposed to do that because they're a "boy, girl, good Christian, etc."

They don’t play with a sword that way because they are a boy. They play with a sword that way because it is a sword. I don’t think a child who is disinclined to play that way would end up playing with the sword in the first place. Unless maybe they had a thing for playing “museum curator” or something like that. Anyone here ever play “museum curator” or know a child that has?

Anyone here ever play “museum curator” or know a child that has? I used to play Diablo with a sword and shield set with a mate. We often left the sword laying around the garden and had to find it after killing a monster...or one of us played Grislwold and handed out a quest to get an ore before he could make the sword. But none of this is Museum Curator. Kids are kids and will play with toys, crazy mother in this story is indeed crazy.

I'm not sure if you guys are trying to dispute me or agree with me. It seems odd to tell me that "they don't play with a sword that way because they are a boy" when the statement I was reacting to initially was "I guess this is her first male child."

Ah, yes, but I bet once the hero got the sword, I’m sure said hero went as nuts he or she could within the context of the game, yes? I mean, it’s a swoooorrrrrd! I'm not sure if you guys are trying to dispute me or agree with me. It seems odd to tell me that "they don't play with a sword that way because they are a boy" when the statement I was reacting to initially was "I guess this is her first male child." I am trying to dispute any assertion that gender roles have anything to do with how a child plays with a sword. Whether that assertion was real or implied. I’m in the “Hey! It’s a sword!” camp. That said, in general, you are correct. There is a lot of social expectation in how children are raised and how they should play. I think, on the whole, such gender assumptions should be shunned where possible. But still: we are a long way from throwing those off completely. I'm also partial to "hello, my name is Inigo Montoya... you killed my father, prepare to die." Only if I had the fancy rapier to do it justice would I go with Inigo Montoya. Of course, if you get a collapsible sword, you just have to go with, “No. I am your father!”

Indeed once we got the sword we went mad on the monsters we imagined in our heads. I am firmly in the "It's a sword that is how you play with it no matter what gender you are". Though to be fair my girl cousin would have not played with it at all...but that was her parents fault since they kept on telling her she had to act like a girl.

The point is, when you DO encounter a set of children where the males play with "violent" toys and the females do not, the most likely explanation is gender roles, NOT natural predisposition. If you encounter a group of children where no one or everyone plays with those kinds of toys, the social expectations they were exposed to were something completely different.
If you had a completely unbiased child, not exposed to any concepts about "behavior" or "swords," I am not sure if they would even have any clue what to do with the toy.

But when it is a gender roles situation, the parent certainly wouldn’t be buying toy swords for their daughters. Well, that’s just not knowing what a sword is. But in any case, I am pretty certain that “whacking things with an object” is something children of a certain age will do whether or not they know what that object is for. It’s part of natural exploration.
