I'm told you're actually supposed to spray Pepper Spray in a cloud, but nobody seems to do it.

Bill O'Reilly and Megyn Kell on Fox News said it's just a food product. Of course, they wouldn't be saying that if they got sprayed in the face. The part that angered me the most was when O'Reilly says that we shouldn't Monday morning quarterback the police and that UC Davis is a liberal place. That heavily implies it'd be an issue for him if this occured somewhere conservative. Political ideology shouldn't matter here, peaceful protesters shouldn't be reacted to violently by police. Yes, I do consider being sprayed in the face multiple times with pepper spray to be violence. To put things in to perspective a bell pepper rates 0 Scovilles, a jalapeno pepper rates 3,500-8,000, police grade pepper spray is 500,000-2milion. I've gotten a jalapeno seed in my eye before, that was pretty painful. I can't imagine the pain from getting pepper sprayed multiple times. It's already been ruled in the courts that the use of pepper spray can count as torture. Back in the 90s environmental protesters chained themselves to trees to protest logging. Prior to this incident the police would normally just cut away the chains and arrest the people involved. But not this time, this time they took q-tips and swabbed their eyes with pepper spray. When finished, one of the cops even said, "We're not torturing you anymore." 12 years later and the protesters finally won their court case. They are now all $1 richer as a result (not counting legal fees). A linkPepper spray is most definitely not a "compliance tool" and spraying peaceful protesters is not only inappropriate and immoral, but it is illegal. Especially when this is what happened: Police used batons to try to push the students apart. Those they could separate, they arrested, kneeling on their bodies and pushing their heads into the ground. Those they could not separate, they pepper-sprayed directly in the face, holding these students as they did so. When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats. Several of these students were hospitalized. Others are seriously injured. One of them, forty-five minutes after being pepper-sprayed down his throat, was still coughing up blood. bicyclebarricade.wordpress.com/2011/11/19/open-letter-to-chancellor-linda-p-b-katehi/That is pretty much a textbook case of excessive force. That is pretty much a textbook case of police abuse. OWS will be on the right side of history with the police (and by extension the conservatives who support them) will be on the wrong side.

They made a loss after winning a case that ruled they were tortured by the state? That's outrageous!

"You need to realize that what you're actually shocked by is the sudden realization that we've spent the last decade building the kind of authoritarian police state where something like that can happen."
I disagree with this. It was a person demonstrating bad choices not unlike every other human in existence. They'll likely be dealt with in time. Or is that religious bitch that pepper sprayed someone that disagreed with her one more symbol of an "authoritarian police state where something like that can happen"?

These aren't isolated cases. They are part of a pattern, an institutional culture that allows and even encourages these things. Treating these as just bad apples only allows it to continue. no she was a bitch who used religion to justify her being a bitch. and a straw man. That has nothing to do with the point he was making.

It still isn't. Public outcry should be used. We didn't build anything to be "above the laws". It's more that people lay back and accept such bullshit because "It's not them it effects".

Of course it's a "compliance tool." Its entire purpose is to say YOU MUST OBEY!!
SoaD's "Deer Dance" has been on my mind a lot lately.
