More proof that Republicans are out of touch with reality.
EDIT: I take back my statement about child labor laws. I didn't realize how dangerous these jobs can actually be.

I was a school janitor for a few years. And while I agree that kids are messy and should learn to clean up after themselves, firing janitors would put a lot of hard working people on the streets. And school janitorial jobs don't even pay enough as is.

I recall back in middle and high schools that students had to pick up trash if they were punished with detention.

I recall back in middle and high schools that students had to pick up trash if they were punished with detention. Yeah, that’s good. But once again, that is just basic cleanliness and presentation. And frees up the janitors’ time for the really important, heavy duty stuff already mentioned in this thread and article.

I kind of agree, if the janitors are monitoring the kids. It could go for volunteer credit, and teach responsibility.
But Newt is an idiot for making this mandatory, and firing people.

How the fuck is this even floating in "Think of the Children" America? Because the Republicans are trying to take us back to the 50s. The 1850s.

It's eerie just how many comments in the article think this is a good idea. My dad is the head custodian in the middle school he works in. Fuck Gingrich. One commenter even said that the reason poor neighborhoods are trashy is because parents aren't doing their job to teach kids to clean, and not because, ya know, it's a poor neighborhood.
One made the comment about how this is done in Japan, and Gingrich was even better because at least he'd pay the children. You know what Japan also has? Their own word for 'death by overwork' and the 5th largest suicide rate.

If we have to make children work, then we should restrict them to mostly parasitic activities, like politics, marketing or stock market speculation. To be fair, ten-year-old stockbrokers could probably do as good a job as their grown-up, university-educated equivalent. If not better.

Speaking of which, I recall something about a student dying over his/her dedication in going to school to learn, and his/her parents was proud of that. I can't remember the details though.

If its small stuff like helping in to keep the classroom clean, its ok, but not shit that could get a kid killed, or dealing with nasty chemicals. And firing the janitors won't help the already shitty economy.

It's cool actually, those school janitors could just become hospital janitors instead. I think they'd prefer that immensely, considering they'd be able to find a mildly effeminate doctor to constantly annoy with no consequences whatsoever.

It always occurred to me what if there are kids who rather work than go to school? I know kids who have to work to support their families. They can't go to school on a regular basis because their parents are busy/druggies/lazy/sick/etc.
