The news article actually linked the study in question, I bet it has the answer to your question.

The news article actually linked the study in question, I bet it has the answer to your question. Looking at the study's sample size, I see that the only two religions that were really considered. Christianity (67%) and Judaism (1%) And that for some reason, "atheist" and "none" were considered separate. It's kinda funny how "religious" has become synonymous with "Christian" in some countries, because that's the vibe I'm getting from this study. Personally, I would've preferred a much wider selection of various religions rather than just two. (But then, I wasn't in charge of this, so it's not like I'm going to get my way just because I'm complaining on an internet forum) I'm curious as to what other religions like Buddhism and such think of atheism. Heck, I'm curious as to what the Jewish people thought about atheists, but all results are lumped together. Ah well. It's not a big deal.

Easy to answer, many people don't believe they're actually the same thing. You see quite often that people who are obviously atheist refuse to identify as such because they believe it contains something more than "doesn't believe in God." Additionally, you often see Fundies deny that atheists simply have no affeliation--someone who has no affeliation is just ignorant, waiting to be witnessed to, while an atheist is a militant fool who denies that there is a God.

Aye...wasn't there a study some time back that basically said that people trusted pretty much every minority over atheists?

I'm pretty sure any Buddhist worth a damn doesn't care, because belief in the tenets of the faith aren't actually a factor in what happens. There's no concept of "If you don't believe in Buddhism, you will be punished". At least, to my knowledge. I admit I could learn more about it, but it always seemed to me it was deed and intent that decided your path in Buddhism, not whether you happened to believe in it.

However, I want to see if that actually applies to reality.

Buddhism is also frequently mixed with another, more doctrinal religion. So, there's that.

This is not surprising, but it's making a friend of mine lose faith in humanity again.
