Don't try to keep the illegal immigrants out, give them the same protections as other citizens. No, seriously. Don't make it illegal for companies to hire illegal immigrants. Do make it illegal to pay them less than legal ones. This way, there's no incentive for companies to hire illegal immigrants over other Americans. Bingo. Another thing that would help would be to increase foreign aid to Mexico and make serious efforts to help modernize the country, so the temptation to flee to the U.S. is reduced. It astounds me that I haven’t seen this this argument once in mainstream political discourse on the issue. It further astounds me that such an idea is usually seen as extremist or ridiculous when I’ve mentioned it. Apparently, helping them is not any of our business. ...because taking measures to prevent illegal immigration is our business, but taking measures to prevent illegal immigration is not our business. Not only would that require obscene amounts of money when the US is already loaded with debt, but it would almost certainly require a direct military intervention to deal with the drug cartels. They're militarily and financially far more powerful than the Mexican government (which itself would just use aid money to line their own pockets) and I'll wager would be just as good at guerrilla warfare as the Taliban or the Viet Cong. Not to mention unless you seriously think Mexico is the only place illegals come from, modernising that one country won't do jack shit to fix things.

Personally, a fence isn't such a bad idea. After all a nation has to mark its borders somehow, as far as keeping illegals out, its a joke. No form of passive defense will ever keep anyone out. It will discourage some, and make it harder for them, but it wont solve the problem one little bit. What about the wildlife? Are we going to be so arrogant as to ignore nature even more?

I’m not even going to debate someone who tries to gloss over the fact that illegal Mexican immigrants are over 60% of all illegal immigrants and more than five times that of any other country ( link).

Because 40% is completely insignificant is it? Also, nice to see you glossing over the fact that modernising Mexico is simply infeasible.

You know what I reckon would modernise Mexico? Make Cocaine legal. All of a sudden you wouldn't have bloodthristy criminal cartels camped along the US mexican/border. But fuck that might require people to take an attitude to drugs which wasn't simply, drugs are bad mmmkay.
Anyway i think the US needs a fence on its border with Canada. I mean there are fucking bears coming down from there. And really bears are bad. You only want twinks.

You'd need to legalise pretty much every drug in existence before the cartels lose die out.

You'd need to legalise pretty much every drug in existence before the cartels lose die out. Sounds sensible to me. A darker theory about the fence... once you have a fence, you have a clear line beyond which its ok to shoot trespassers. Maybe thats part of the appeal.
