I don't like this video. The child clearly does not want to confront Rep. Bachmann on this. He looked uncomfortable the entire time and his mother should not have pressured him into doing this. Yeah, when I saw it I immediately thought it was a set-up. that poor kid likely doesn't even have the slightest idea what "gay" even is. it was obviously a coached line he was told to say. While Bachman is a horrid, hateful bitch, this kind of exploitative, ambush tactic using your own child is kind of despicable. Quoted for truth.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who felt uncomfortable with this.

I think there is a certain point that the kid needs to learn how to speak up for what is right. And I was under the impression that most people on this board figured an 8-year-old should probably have learned something about homosexuality, and possibly why homophobia is wrong. Especially now that homosexuality is in the open and many people are finding that their 5-and-6-year-olds in kindergarten are beginning to notice that their playmates have two parents of the same gender.

It was clearly set up. I don't like it. Exploiting your children for a cause however worthy is vomit inducing.

Set up it may be, but I've seen parents do a lot worse.

I'm kinda mixed about this
On one hand there was that kid that spoke at the GLAAD awards a few years back and he was a very intelligent young man. On the other, given the propensity that parents have of using their children as tools for political gain I do wonder if this was a set up as well.

Of course it was a “set up.” They went to the event solely to tell of Bachman, and they even brought along someone to record it for posterity. And it is not much of a set-up, because the child telling her off is all that happened. They didn’t do anything to lay any sort of trap. They just had the kid tell her off at one of Bachman’s regular public appearances. The only thing that might be a problem is having the child deliver the message. Other than that, it is no different than any other protester showing up at an event just to tell off the guest of honor.

I'm going to have to agree that unless the kid actually understands the issue and agrees with what (s)he's being told to say, (s)he shouldn't be used to make a political point.

Set up it may be, but I've seen parents do a lot worse. That doesn't really justify anything though, does it?

No, but at the same time, I can't come down too hard on this if I accept that parents are able to ingrain other completely moronic ideas in their kids' heads.
