As fundies are oh-so-fond of asking others, so shall I ask of them: "Were you there?"

He may be gone, but he left behind ideas that will be echoed by his thousands of readers and admirers.

Damn. Just, damn.
May his writings survive the centuries.
I imagine the folks at Rapture Ready are already foaming at the mouth in glee.

As fundies are oh-so-fond of asking others, so shall I ask of them: "Were you there?" -Screams with rage- I keep forgetting that one - that campus fundy I mentioned in F&B used that one too. RIP Mr. Hitchens, I'm sorry this world was so fucked up.

One other thing, I hope he and his brother were able to part on good terms after everything that came between them...

Not crying in any way, sorry. He was not any kind of liberal hero. Conservatives always back each other based on their religious views. I thought athiests were above that.
The only thing I had in common with him was a shared lack of belief in God. On just about every other political issue I disagreed totally with him. In fact I found many of his views to be offensive bullshit. He swung from communist to neo-con without stopping in between.
He was a fat rich white guy born into money. He may have been a lefty for a time but the only consistant thing about him was his blatant mocking contempt for anyone who did not agree with his views. And then the hypocrisy of a man who does a 180 then starts bashing all the people ( friends AND family ) who for years he had agreed with.
Also 62 is 'young'. Chain smoking alcoholic gets oesophageal cancer? Pretty much brought it on himself. Too much booze, too much coffee, too many cigs, too much rich food. His rich, selfish, fat, greedy life choices killed him.
I may sound harsh and uncaring, but nowhere near as harsh and uncaring as Chris could be. Feel free to reply but in honour of Mr Hitchens I will treat your comments with the same level of respect he treated his critics...

They were his choices, and he defended them with the eloquency, intellect and wit nearly unmatched in any human we know of. I won't defend or justify his positions, because I also disagree with some of them, but the celebration of his life focuses on his willingness to grasp life by the horns and wrestle with it until both are bleeding and broken. No one can accuse him of not living a full life his way. If only to underscore his impact on the world, the New York Times stopped their Print edition to put Hitchens' obituary on their front page. www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/12/hitchens-dead-at-62-new-york-times-redraws-a1-for-obit/250093/

Oh fuck, I didn't even THINK of how the fundies were going to react to the news... Be prepared for mainpage worthy quotes to abound on the internets... I wish I could be so influential as to get idiots riled up like this. I think this is a pretty good sign the man's life was a success.

I didn't like the man either, but he did die of cancer; I think that's worthy of some amount of posthumous respect? This is actually the first I've heard of his death. It is interesting though, how he was pretty much an atheist version of the people on Fox News. Going from one extremist position (in this case, communism) to another equally-extremist yet opposite position (in this case, American-style conservatism) is actually quite common. Ayn Rand grew up in Soviet Russia. Mussolini was originally a communist before coming up with fascism. And there are plenty of atheists from fundie backgrounds who remain obnoxious and completely convinced that they and like-minded people are the only ones in the right. Many of them become mainpagers.

It's actually not uncommon for people to go from being communist to being conservative. My most conservative relatives grew up in Lithuania when it was still part of the Soviet Union, so, it's not like it's totally unheard of. I think it has something to do with realizing, "Hey, this actually kind of sucks" when you've been in communism, and since you thought everything sucked while you were communist, you kind of want to do the exact opposite. Also, I really don't understand the hate for people who were born into money. Yeah, if they just fuck around like Paris Hilton or the Kardashians it's annoying, but seriously? People don't pick their parents. Children of wealthy parents didn't pick their family any more than you or I did. It's what they do afterwards, when they become adults, that actually matters.
