Eh, I was never a Hitchens fan. He was really just too much of a dick for my tastes. Everything he said was as deliberately controversial and confrontational as possible, and he dismissed, denigrated, and despised anyone who so much as dared to suggest a differing opinion.
In many ways he was a fundie: utterly certain he was right no matter what anyone else might say or what evidence might be presented against him, utterly disdainful of anyone holding a different view, arrogant, self-righteous, and elitist. The fact that he wasn't religious didn't matter.
That said, I did respect him for his intelligence and passion. I just wish he wasn't such an asshole about it.

Even great minds can hold stupid opinions.
How do you think fundamentalist Christianity got as popular as it is? It wasn't because the leaders were derping their way through life.

Had a drink of Johnny Walker Black in his honor. No one can replace you, Christopher.

I didn't exactly like him either, and I certainly wouldn't call him a "hero", but I can still respect the fact that he maintained his integrity in the face of death. Quite frankly, I don't see how your post is any better than the fundie vulturing we routinely criticize.

While I may take issues with his approach, I respect his arguments and integrity.
Rest well, brother.

Grabbed from "Joe My God" Hitchens said some pretty stupid things, but he also said some pretty great things. It's intellectually dishonest to reduce someone to only their worst deeds while ignoring what good they've done.

Oh fuck, I didn't even THINK of how the fundies were going to react to the news... Be prepared for mainpage worthy quotes to abound on the internets... That was one of my first thoughts when I entered this thread. You know how they love being vultures.

Mom kinda pissed me off on this, giggling at one of those right-wing nutjobs saying "boy will he be surprised" - she's not fundy but she devolves into fundy-mode sometimes and we always end up fighting over it. She dislikes Hawking now once she learned he was an Athiest, she thinks he's "bitter" - I think I just lost all respect for her.

As fundies are oh-so-fond of asking others, so shall I ask of them: "Were you there?" -Screams with rage- I keep forgetting that one - that campus fundy I mentioned in F&B used that one too. RIP Mr. Hitchens, I'm sorry this world was so fucked up. Post from thread author: Christopher Hitchens died after his long battle with cancer, just a few hours ago. Luckily, he accepted Christ and repented his Athieism before he passed[/in before the liars for Jesus]
