I demand open source GMOs! And I want the most efficient and ecologically sound farming methods used, but studies like this make me think organic food is not the way to go.

Combining the best of both worlds is the way to go. Unfortunately my family seems to think that GMO foods are like some sort of infernal carcinogenic Soylent Green.

This, people, is why you don't post while high. It makes you look like an imitation flower child. What's wrong with that? Proselytising for idealism and rainbow farts without so much as an attempt to figure out how to actually fix things is generally frowned upon.

He wasn't criticizing optimism. He was criticizing the fact that your original post made no sense. Actually, he was criticising yo' momma's ass. <flamewar>

Proselytising for idealism and rainbow farts without so much as an attempt to figure out how to actually fix things is generally frowned upon. I'm all for figuring out how to fix things. MR. GLOOM: The world's crap. I hate everything. That's it. ME: The world's crap but I won't let it get me down...Now time to tackle these problems.

So perhaps skipping the flowery nonsense and going straight to the important bits (ways to actually fix things) would be advisable, no?

The point is that your post was a confusing clusterfuck that, quite frankly, many of us just didn't read because it was used a ton of words to say VERY LITTLE.

I'm all for figuring out how to fix things. MR. GLOOM: The world's crap. I hate everything. That's it. ME: The world's crap but I won't let it get me down...Now time to tackle these problems. Er. The point is that your post was a confusing clusterfuck that, quite frankly, many of us just didn't read because it was used a ton of words to say VERY LITTLE. I tried to read it, but all I got was the rainbow and sunshine crap that made you sound very naive and almost like you were closing your eyes to the unpleasantness in the world. Earlier you asked what's wrong with sounding like a flower child. You didn't ask me specifically, but I'd still like to try answering. The "flower child" thing is heavily rooted in idealism. Everyone should treat each other with dignity and respect. We need to live in harmony with the world. C'mon people now, smile on your brother, evrybody get together and try to love one another right now. All worthy goals, to be sure. Absolutely goals that we should strive for. But, much like world peace, it's completely unattainable. The basic problem is you can't get everyone to stop fighting with each other. You can't get ever company to stop paying its labor as little as it can get away with or providing the bare minimum of what we would call tolerable working conditions. Sure, we made great strides in the industrialized world. But it really seems to be that as long as someone has the chance to screw someone else over for profit, someone will get screwed. I would like to call it human nature, but I'll let the sociologists define it correctly. The hippie idealism I see doesn't do a whole lot to fix the problems they point out. We should buy organic and free trade goods. Excellent! I agree whole heartily. However, I am on a budget. So I buy what I can afford. Luckily, some of what I get can be free trade. But some of my friends, not so much. So they'll get the clothes that started life as cotton grown by tenant farmers who get paid shitty wages and brutal working conditions, sewn together by four year old orphan girls in a sweatshop in North Korea or China, shipped over in a crowded container ship leaking oil all over the Pacific, stocked by undocumented workers in their local Walmart, all while driving past the three remaining mom and pop clothing stores. Why do they do this? Of course they care about all that I just mentioned. They aren't monsters. But their kid does need a new shirt. And their salary dictates the three dollar shirt from Walmart instead of the ten dollar shirt from The Happy Hippie. None of that I saw addressed in your happy little post. You asked what's wrong with sounding like a flower child? Well, there's my answer. The short answer anyways.

I'm tempted to suggest thrift stores, but...everybody deserves for at least some of their clothing to be new. And thrift stores aren't really that much cheaper.

You could have linked to Wikipedia instead of TV Tropes, y'know.
