Scott Lively, in an effort to spread good will towards (straight) men, has decided to make his book, Redeeming the Rainbow: A Christian Response to the ’Gay’ Agenda, free for download. It should be noted, as you can see in the quote, that the "gift of homophobia" saying is of his own words. Apparently "homophobia", in his conspiracy world of his, is a doubletalk-like word, used... I have not had the chance to read the book at the moment, but his full letter explaining "homophobia" is just full of fail. www.defendthefamily.com/pfrc/newsarchives.php?id=1399321On a side note, if I may shoot down one of his arguments: Just because homosexuality is not a mental disorder doesn't automatically mean having an aversion to homosexuality is a disorder in itself. If you dislike the idea of two guys/gals being affectionate, it don't make you "normal", it's just part of your individuality; in the same sense you may dislike, say rap music, or apples, the color red, etc. So again, disliking men/women being intament with one another doesn't make you "right" nor them "wrong", it's just a "side-effect" of being straight. Edit: Grammar corrections.

I'm guessing this book is worth exactly what you pay for it.
Still, because apparently I haven't managed to get rid of that pesky intellectual masochism, I'll read and dissect it over the next few days.

Skimmed the book... There is a whole section where the author explains, at great length, the tactics that gay people use to infiltrate churches. As if they're all organized into a secret military operation or something. Well then you must not know many lesbians. Dammit this guy has no idea how sexuality works at all. He also says that transgender people are simply the extreme form of homosexuality. He also can't tell the difference between transgenderism and transvestism. (Emphasis mine.) Because naturally the essence of being female is to be a slave. Good to see these guys admit to their own misogyny. Things you can "learn" from this book: - LGBT people are incapable of being happy - LGBT people are leading an organized, underground effort to destroy Judeo-Christian morality - Their secret agents can be anywhere, and might even look like non-stereotypical, normal people! - They recruit children through Gay/Straight Alliances at school campuses - Canada is their homofascist stronghold - Bisexual people 1) always chose their sexual orientation and 2) are incapable of saying no - LGBT people discriminate against straight people as a part of the "gay agenda" - Gays will try to befuddle your mind with their satanic and deceptive "gayspeak" - And so much more!

How is Scott Lively still able to say these patently-false things in the twenty-first century and still be taken seriously? Oh wait, I forgot. The reason is obvious. It's because Americans are so much stupider and more bigoted than the rest of the free world.

I should download this. It'll be even more hilarious than The Answers Book. And extraneous: It's spelled "intimate."

While it is true that the term "homophobia" was first used to describe a psychological condition in which a person is paralyzingly afraid of their own homosexual inclinations (a condition brought on by cultural and societal conditioning, it must be noted, not any inherent "wrongness" of homosexuality), the etymology of the word makes it highly appropriate to also describe someone with a deep sense of fear and hatred towards homosexuality in others, especially since other, more psychologically accurate terms are now used for the original condition. (It must also be noted that the preferred treatment for that condition is no longer, despite the frothing objections of fundies, "re-adjustment" to a straight orientation, but rather counselling to find acceptance of who you are.) Using the term in this way is not "hijacking" or "redefining" it in any way.
This asshole's book would make the real Jesus weep in frustration and sadness. It is nothing but judgmental hatred and fear wrapped up in "Biblical truth," which in this case has about as much to do with reality as "Krull." He is right, at least, in one thing. He IS trying to "give the gift of homophobia," and it will be "remembered for years."
As for his lamenting that homosexuality is no longer, as it once was, considered a "mental disorder," it wasn't that long ago that being black was considered a "disorder." Or being a woman. Or poor.

How is Scott Lively still able to say these patently-false things in the twenty-first century and still be taken seriously? Oh wait, I forgot. The reason is obvious. It's because Americans are so much stupider and more bigoted than the rest of the free world. No, Americans are no stupider or bigoted than the rest of the world. In fact, there are quite a few cultures that take bigotry to levels so extreme that what goes on in America and Europe pales by comparison. Americans are just like everyone else. Some of them are stupid and some of them are brilliant and the vast majority of them are somewhere in between. The same goes for bigotry. For you to condemn an entire people based on the idiotic rantings of a single individual is as bad as Scott Lively damning all homosexuals for his biases and blanket judgments. And you know it is. Lively sells books ( although one has to wonder how MANY books he sells if he feels a need to give them away...it has been my experience that no author ever gives any writing away unless no one will buy it and he is desperate for exposure and publicity....), Lively sells books because there are a non-insubstantial amount of people in the world who are terrified of anything different or foreign, and when the "foreign" people look and act just like you do, well, that's downright terrifying. Yes, these people are stupid, and yes, they are bigoted, but they do not in any way represent main-stream Americans or main-stream American culture. They are the noisy minority that in a news-starved culture get a lot of attention. There are two ways you can get hits on your website or viewers on your network: cute kitties or some asshole saying something outrageously offensive. (Like that D-Bag and his "What I Would Do If I Were Poor And Black" blog entry idiocy. Wish I could remember that dick's name.) This guy gets attention specifically because he is being offensive to a hell of a lot of Americans. If we didn't find his shit offensive, it wouldn't be news in the first place. So no, not all Americans are "stupid and bigoted." We find idiots like Livley as dickish as you do. Saying that all Americans are stupid and bigoted is, however, pretty fucking bigoted.

To say that LGBT activists having hijacked the words "homophobia" and "gay" is bad makes about as much sense as saying that it's bad that the kids have hijacked the words "cool", "radical", and "Chuck Testa."

Yay, Scott! How generous of you, indeed.
Much the same way we remembered segregated schools, "no coloreds" signs, and white robes with pointy hats for years to come.

Don't compare yourself to the black movement1 You've never gone through that level of persecution! It's an insult to everyone who fought for black rights!"

Since most of the objection to LGBT people comes from religious excuses, sure.
