By "small government", he means small enough to fit down your pants.

I know people (who are fucking British anyway and don't even get a vote) who have been drinking the Ron Paul Kool-Aid. I'll look forward to pointing this out to them.

I know people (who are fucking British anyway and don't even get a vote) who have been drinking the Ron Paul Kool-Aid. I'll look forward to pointing this out to them. My dad is a Ron Paul fanboy. At every opportunity, he'll say something like, "All politicians support torture, illegal wars, the war on drugs, and unconstitutional wiretapping... except Ron Paul!" I asked him why he would vote for a candidate who not only supported DOMA, but a bill that would make it illegal to hear DOMA in the Supreme Court? If he's so sure his anti-gay views are "constitutional", then why is he afraid of other people questioning its constitutionality? Dad says that gay rights is not a big deal "in the scheme of things." (He doesn't know I'm bi.) I also asked him why he would support a candidate who is pro-life. Dad uses similar justification to above, but also adds on "It's the states' rights to determine whether abortion is legal!" The "states' rights" card is missing the point entirely. 1) The 14th Amendment says that states cannot deprive their citizens of constitutional liberties, and 2) Too much power in the hands of any state is detrimental to individual liberty, and it doesn't matter whether the state is at the federal, state, or local level.

So when it comes down to brass tacks, a "Libertarian" really is just a conservative borrowing liberal rhetoric for convenience only!

This doddering fool, Ron Paul, definitely doesn't represent me. *facepalms* If he's running on the Libertarian ticket, I may have to stay home on Election Day next year.

You're quite right about his views being more suited for Republicans, by the way.

You're quite right about his views being more suited for Republicans, by the way. My dad also supports him because they both believe in ending the Federal Reserve and letting the magic of the free market work it out. In fact, in one heated discussion, my dad even said that the establishment of the Federal Reserve was "just like a hate crime," and went on to explain how the pseudo-historical book The Creature From Jekyll Island explains it all.

Or you could, you know, abstain from voting for president (or write in somebody else) while still voting for other offices/proposals that have more to do with day to day functions.

If I could vote, I'd vote for Captain Picard. He can solve any problem in 45 minutes. Of course he can fix our economy.

Dad says that gay rights is not a big deal "in the scheme of things." (He doesn't know I'm bi.) That's such a fucking bullshit argument. It really pisses me off. It's not like millions of people's rights matters as much as your personal economic preferences, right? After all- you're more numerous!
