Jews were prominent members of society in 19th century France, until the Dreyfus Affair set off a new wave of antisemitism.
Societies can change. The purpose of the State of Israel is to ensure that there is at least one place on Earth where Jews can be safe from oppression.

Not all Jews. Just the assholes. In cattletrucks, no doubt. If you're trying to make a joke, LHM, it isn't very funny.

So burqas are too much, but a modest blouse and a long skirt is too little?
These people make no sense at all.

Yeah, well, there's no solving that one.

When I lived in Eretz Israel in the early '80s, my Israeli friends told me "There are 2 types of Israeli - Religious and Normal". how true that statement was. In Israeli society, the Ultra-Orthodox (3% of the population) are regarded with contempt. They live of the state by demanding, and getting, almost limitless funds. They do not work, that is done by their wives and womenfolk. They do not do Meloeem (Army service). They impose their "authority" by vigilante action, with the police being obliged to stand back. They do not pay taxes, yet are GIVEN homes, schools, hospitals, transport, communications and pocket money! In short, they contribute nothing to the state, yet are allowed to build settlements in disputed regions (funded entirely by the State), despite being in contravention of International and Israeli law, but backed up by the Knesset nonetheless. These settlements protected by the IDF, which doesn't stop some of the settlers taking pot-shots at any passing Arab. In Israel, new Secular Laws take months to be implemented after being approved. New Religious Laws are implented immediately upon proposal, but stay in effect for years after their rejection. Now at last, the Tea-Cosy Brigade are getting their just desserts with the approval of the mainstream religious, the secular majority, the police and.... (bless his cotton socks) Shimon Peres, the President. Israel is a secular country ruled by a minority of religious lunatic. Sadly I can't see that changing any time soon.

Israel is a secular country ruled by a minority of religious lunatic. Sadly I can't see that changing any time soon. I disagree. First, there is a difference between the haredi having too much influence (which they do) and ruling the country (which they don't). Second, all it will take is one ruling coalition which does not include religious parties and the haredi are boned. In fact, I could see Labor or Kadima running in part on a platform to eliminate haredi privileges.

Holy guacamole, I think I finally understand why Christian fundies love the state of Israel so much. It's because, just as Christian fundies have disproportionate influence in their own society, the Jewish fundies who are the Haredi have vastly disproportionate influence in Israeli society. The two love each other. And isn't the irony that the Haredi are supposedly SO conservative, that they're against the idea of Israel because the Messiah has not yet come. And yet, that doesn't stop them from totally abusing the state of Israel for their own gains. Despicable loons.

To make a long story short, it's the belief that the Jewish people need to gain power before Jesus can come back again and force everyone to convert or die. Of course, most fundies don't really understand any of the underlying concepts beyond "Believe What You're Told To Believe."

In fact, I could see Labor or Kadima running in part on a platform to eliminate haredi privileges. My point is that the Knesset is a 120 Parliament. At the elections (which I voted) you have a choice of 33 parties selected by proportional representation. Result is normally months of horse-trading to form a workable majority and at the end of the day the policies you voted for are already out of the window to satify the "needs" of your partners. What has happend time and time again is a 59-59 split with the 2 (unelected) members of the National Religious Patry sitting on the fence. These parasites will only sanction legislation that has been heavily modified to suit their agenda. Thus they effectively run the country. The annoying thing about these people is they won't recognise the State of Israel per se, until the Messiah walks through the door! The other annoying thing is they refuse to speak Hebrew until that day, using Yiddish as their mother tongue. Dealing with these lunatics is like nailing a jelly to the ceiling.

Judaism, Islam and Christianity all have the same root and (basically) the same book and all share a common God. Fundie Christians always preach from the OT, which is the Torah with a few books omitted in order to minimise embarrassment. The Koran is also largely the OT. So many similarites, so much blood needlessly spilt. Islam is a missionary religion, but is tolerant with differing faiths. Christianity is also a missionary religion and is intolerant and judgemental. The Crusades served only to widen the differences and were the greatest crime ever commited by humanity. We suffer the consequences to this day. Judaism is a non-missionary religion, and its closed society arouses suspicion amongst the intolerant.
