This has all happened before and does beg the question why did no-one build a pipeline? Through which country? Afghanistan? Iraq? Trying, dude. Trying.

I think the US response should be to quietly move our subs into position, and if the Iranians try, we sink their ships. For added laughs, we deny any involvement, and suggest that the Iranians do a better job of keeping track of their ships.

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't the Americans, the Saudi Arabians and whats left of the Iraq military break that blockade? Iran and America are not the only nations that would be influenced by the blockade, and I am pretty sure that the disruption to the oil sales from the other gulf countries will cause considerable backlash for Iran. This really seems like a poorly thought out action by Iran, but I just might be reading it wrong. Its not like the west has not gotten involved militarily to protect its oil interests before, why would it be any different now?

Yeah it does sound like they are going to provoke the Saudis with this. God, Iran needs to get its head out its ass.

I doubt it's something they'd ever actually try to do. They're just trying to make themselves seem tough. They couldn't hold it even if they tried.

Exploding ships aren't suspicious at all, right? The Iranians are going to blockade using cruise missiles, not ships. Just whack them on the other side of the Straits and fire at anything that comes near.

The U.S. Fifth Fleet said on Wednesday it would not allow any disruption of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran threatened to stop ships moving through the world's most important oil route. "Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated," the Bahrain-based fleet said in an e-mail. www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/29/us-iran-hormuz-closure-idUSTRE7BR09E20111229

I'm no international law expert, but are those waters not, in fact, theirs to do with as they wish?
"Well yeah, usually we're all about territorial sovereignty, but this is inconvenient!"

I'm no international law expert, but are those waters not, in fact, theirs to do with as they wish? "Well yeah, usually we're all about territorial sovereignty, but this is inconvenient!" At the very most, their territorial waters would include the northern half. The southern half would be owned by Oman, and as such attempting to blockade the whole thing (at least without their okay) would be a violation of Oman's territorial sovereignty. Observe:

Because the US navy would never do anything like blockade a port or anything. Again, Fred, how are us American posters here supposed to keep our military in line? Direct question.
