Let's imagine what some think is a nightmare scenario. What if one of the social conservatives (let's assume Rick Santorum for our purposes) not only wins the nomination, but the Presidency, AND the Republicans get a supermajority in the Senate? How much damage could they do in four years?

Good (terrifying) question. I'm not sure how much they'll actually accomplish, but I'd guess that it'd be one hell of a Constitutional mess. They'll try to repeal Roe v Wade and get same-sex marriage banned via Const amendment, which will create a fiasco of fed vs state laws. There'd probably be a whole lot of budget slashing, driving up unemployment and harming the economy further, with a weakening of the social safety net. Plus, lifting limitations on corporations and traders will see more conglomeration and survival-of-the-fittest. And I think all of this will aid in China becoming the new superpower.
Bottom line is, if it happens, I'm buying Canadian real estate. There's bound to be an exodus.

I'd be more frightened of a win by an economic anarchist like Paul or Gingritch. How much would they cut?

There will be no organised opposition by the Democratic party (along the line of 2006-2008), so everything will pass. They'll be able to find enough traitors to vote against the party, they always do.

I just had an amusing thought: early in Santorum's first term, the Supreme Court rules against Proposition 8, making gay marriage legal throughout America.

How much damage could they do in four years? If they manage to get some of their friends on the Supreme Court? A possible supermajority that could last for decades.

I just had an amusing thought: early in Santorum's first term, the Supreme Court rules against Proposition 8, making gay marriage legal throughout America. Then he becomes the man who was President when gay marriage was legalized. Forever. And eventually Republican revisionists will make it appear that he supported it the whole time. I like that a bit too much.

I'd adopt you if we had room in the house. I guess we could offer you a couch to crash on for a night though.
