Yesterday, I was riding the bus home from my doctor's appointment. The driver of this bus is a really friendly and overall nice guy, although sometimes he can get too chatty. There's another woman who always rides this route and gets on shortly after me. So this woman is talking to the driver, and their discussion somehow turns to Miss California. The driver didn't really seem to care about the gay marriage kerfluffle either way (and given that he admitted to not knowing all the details, I respect him all the more), but the woman said something I found strange and can't say I've heard before.
She said that she's neutral on gay marriage and homosexuality in general. Scratch that - shehas 'moral objections' to it, but said she wouldn't do anything to stop it, because "if they think they can handle God's judgment, I say go ahead and let 'em sin." After that she went off about how Miss California would have won if not for being 'ambushed' and how shameful the liberal media is, but that's beside the point.
I found this interesting because on one hand, it's great that she's not actively putting forth effort to stop it or anything, but on the other, that entire sentiment comes off as incredibly condescending and prickish.
So I'm wondering, has anyone else encountered this viewpoint before (or at least, people as outspoken about it)?

I briefly had a similar viewpoint... I'd gotten to the point where I realized there weren't any good non-religious reasons to oppose same-sex marriage. But the idea of homosexuality being a sin was so wrapped up in the rest of my religion that I couldn't approve of it personally. So, I still thought being gay was bad... but not that we ought to stop gay couples from marrying.
But within a few months of that I ended up losing my faith.

Rather than do any of the heavy lifting themselves, some like to content themselves that daddy will come round and spank the appropriate arses in his own time, whilst they smile beatifically and await the holy rewards for their smug self assurance. It's essentially the same thing as condemnation, just for lazy fuckers.

Isn't the viewpoint of the woman on the bus essentially "hate the sin, lover the sinner"?

Isn't the viewpoint of the woman on the bus essentially "hate the sin, lover the sinner"? No - she made it clear that they're gonna burn and deserve it, but that she just doesn't care.

No - she made it clear that they're gonna burn and deserve it, but that she just doesn't care. that viewpoint id call borderline psychotic. Exactly. Maybe I didn't make it clear in the original post, but she was just sickeningly smug about the whole thing, and was pretty much pulling the 'they're rebelling against God' argument, but with a new, added 'if they keep it up, they deserve what they get, so I'm not gonna try and stop them'.

im sure she thinks shes just taking the side of ll thats good and noble, its a real pity she cant see that even if god exists all shes doing is siding with the bully in the hope that he wont hit her. shes anticipating people who dont live like her being tormented forever- at least when dahmer killed you it was over.
shes a monster waiting to happen.

I had a similar viewpoint when I was a Christian as well. I didn't know what gay was until I was 12 because my dad is the "let gays marry and people will marry dogs and buildings" type, but I honestly can't remember any time I was against letting them have their rights. Sure I believed it was a sin because the church said so, but like Madame Scarlet I realized there was no good nonreligious argument pretty much right away. I would always say "I'm against it personally but it should be allowed," but even though I thought it was a sin I was luckily never able to think of gays as the horrible monsters fundies say they are. Then for my final two years or so of Christianity I was the "all the anti-gay stuff in the Bible is based on mistranslations" type and I eventually just left Christianity altogether. *insert RR rejoicing lunatic "praise the Lord" smiley here*

I was once asked what we can do to end ignorance and apathy. I said I don't know, and I don't care.
