In case some of you don't know who AronRa is... he's a very intelligent man, and knows a shitload about evolution. I think he's a professor in Texas, I'm not entirely sure. Turns out Ida has been over hyped. His videos are always very informative.

I was getting the impression while watching the documentary about Ida the other night that some of the things they were saying about her didn't make a lot of sense. I felt like, while it was a significant find, especially being so complete and intact, that it was simply too old to be an all-important link in the human evolutionary chain.
And I was really disappointed in the "holy grain" comment in the documentary. I agree with AronRa that the comments concerning how this could "prove" religion as wrong was overblown hype.

Quite a few scientists were sounding alarm bells as soon as the paper was published, saying the cladistic analysis wasn't as thorough as it should have been. The scientists who made the find rushed the paper for some cheap publicity.

I didn't think she was supposed to be the link between human and apes. I thought she was supposed to be the link between apes/monkeys and the rest of the mammals.

I didn't think she was supposed to be the link between human and apes. I thought she was supposed to be the link between apes/monkeys and the rest of the mammals. The link between apes/monkeys and the rest of the primates, not mammals. She's a primitive haplorhine (apes and monkeys), occurring shortly after the evolutionary branching between haplorhines and lemurs/lorises (strepsirrhines). She's likely anatomically similar to the species that diverged into two populations that then gave rise to the two primate groups, but is not the "link" itself. (Chances are that there are no surviving fossils of that species, and that we wouldn't recognize them as the most recent common ancestor even if we did find them.)

Also, it's a bit meaningless to ask what the link between humans and apes is. It's somewhat like asking what the link between trees and plants are. They're nested. Here's Wiki's classification of H. Sapiens Sapiens:
Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Animalia Subkingdom: Eumetazoa Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Subclass: Theria Order: Primates Superfamily: Hominoidea <- apes Family: Hominidae Subfamily: Homininae Tribe: Hominini Subtribe: Hominina Genus: Homo Species: H. sapiens Subspecies: H. s. sapiens

Its still an incredible, well-preserved find. It is always cool to find a relative under the dirt.
However, anyone calling Ida the missing link doesn't know what they are talking about.

We are apes. Currently, most apes are humans. Mira: Nicely phrased. The term "missing link" is over-used and almost meaningless. In this case also because Ida's species may not even have living descendants. We can't get a DNA sample, so we'll never know. Oh, I was in Oslo last weekend. I saw Ida up close. Wherever she fits in, she's an incredible piece of rock.

Today, I saw a video from someone on YouTube to whom I am subscribed. It talks not only about the Ida fossil, but also about another scientific discovery...one that could tear the heart out of the creationists' more popular arguments. ;D As there are several links provided in the info box to the right of the video, a simple link will have to suffice, as opposed to the ordinarily more convenient embedding. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZgOvOM7SDY

I can't wait to hear what kind of apologetics are being worked up for this discovery lol.

Very informative. The blatant attention-whoring done with Ida is very disappointing.

He talks a little about Ida again when he addresses Venomfangxs' replacement, GEERUP. Link incomming.

Because it's f*cking kewl and I found it by first going to the link above..
The history of evolution put to trance music
I admit I never understood why creationists had to limit their understanding of the Universe to appreciate it's awsomeness.

The first half was good. The second half had way too much focus on Chimps and that Homo sapiens sapiens talking without any words coming out of his mouth wasn't the most inspiring thing I've ever seen.
I have GOT to find that music though. I've never heard of Kodiak Star and I can't find anything about them.

I didn't like the song.
And I couldn't follow most of the video. It basically amounted to me going, "Holy shit!" every time I recognized something.
So...
"Holy shit! Bones! Holy shit! Fish! Holy shit! Mouse! Holy shit! Bat! Holy shit! Monkies! Holy shit! More monkies! Holy shit! Creepy guy!"
