I notice anytime a seemingly-serious flat earther comment gets to the main page, a chorus of people declare that all the flat-earthers are Poes. While I've posted a diatribe about it several times, the end of this video (which is a collection of nominees for a most ridiculous creationist claim award) is a video of a flat-earther on (Iraqi) TV. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztejNZIZdsU

While some may be Poes, not all are. Flat-earthers are merely those around us that prefer to believe in what came out of the ignorance of primitive men pertaining to the world around them instead of the proven facts of scientific discovery.
And I wouldn't be surprised if a greater number of the followers of Islam still believed the world is flat than do Christians. But then, all the Christians I know accept that the earth is round and not the center of the universe.

Sorry, but the earth being flat is such an obvious error that it's hard to believe anyone still thinks that way except for groups of natives in Africa and such. I would tend to believe though that Iraqis and other middle easterners would be more apt to believe in a flat earth given the control religion has

Wasn't it Einstein who said something long the lines of that the universe and human stupidity are infinite, only he's not sure about the universe?

It's not much more of a stretch than YEC. The mythology was created before we had all the information.
For all we know, Mario doesn't believe in the 3rd dimension. When he walks past something, he might believe it became a ghost, if only for that instant.

I've got to say, there's at least an excuse in the obscurity of science when it comes to YEC. most people don't really grasp carbon dating, fossil records, DNA etc. Most people can, however look at pictures of the Earth and reasonably assess that it's not flat. There are a few other simple tests I can think of that demonstrate it. It's hard to sum up things like evolution and the development of the planet that simplistically, and that's the problem when it comes to a lot of YECs. It's harder to believe people could deny tangible, simple to understand things like what their eyes can perceive than it is to believe they can't wrap their heads around science.

But in both cases, there's a very large degree of willful ignorance. Not only do they not understand, but they don't want to understand. And that is the crux of it right there. As I said in my post above, people prefer to believe what ancient peoples wrote about the world around them but didn't have the knowledge or technology to understand, instead of paying attention to what scientific study has discovered about the true nature of things. They won't listen or learn because to do so may call into question everything about their religious beliefs. And that just won't do.

If you think the earth isn't flat, drive across Kansas.

If you think the earth isn't flat, drive across Kansas. In a way, the earth is pretty flat. The highest and lowest points are about 6 and 7 miles off of sea level, respectively. That 13 mile difference is roughly the same as the variation in the earth's radius (due to the fact that the earth is an oblate spheroid), which is ~ 3950 - 3963 miles. That's only a 0.35% variation. Even so, I work with data from weather satellites that orbit the earth. I would love to hear an explanation of how their orbits would be possible if the earth wasn't round.

They're not as famous as they used to be, but they're still around. Essentially they take Young Earth Creationism to the next level of stupidity.

Do flat earthers have a list of banned objects? Not only globes, but things like GPS. It would be interesting to see such a ban list.
